FLC volleyball falls to Metro State in RMAC opener

DENVER, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team opened RMAC conference play on Friday, falling by set scores of 25-21, 25-10 and 25-18 on the road against Metropolitan State University of Denver.

Fort Lewis (4-6 overall, 0-1 RMAC) continued to show bright spots, finishing with 51 digs and holding the Roadrunners (6-4 overall, 1-0 RMAC), preseason picked No. 5 in the RMAC coaches' poll, to a .244 hitting percentage. But it was consistency that plagued the Skyhawks in Friday's contest, especially on the offensive side of the net as they finished with 22 digs versus 16 errors for a .055 attacking percentage.

"It was disappointing. Our execution was below average and our competitive spirit was below average," said Fort Lewis head coach, Tricia Melfy. "We're making the same mistakes after 10 matches. We're not getting beat, we're losing at this point. We've got to start executing what we teach."

Fort Lewis jumped out to a 9-1 lead in Set One, and held the advantage as late as 18-17, before Metro State produced a 7-0 run to take a 23-17 lead and hold on for the 25-18 win to begin the evening. With momentum in hand, the Roadrunners were able to capture the second set, 25-10, and old off the Skyhawks, 25-18, in Set Three to seal the victory.

Senior middle blocker Bailey Longacre, sophomore middle blocker Tye Wedhorn and junior outside hitter Chandler Karr all paced Fort Lewis with five kills apiece.

With a total of 12 new players on the roster, Melfy said that chemistry between players is still being formed and has contributed to some of the inconsistency on offense.

"As a coach, you always hope for the players to catch on quicker together, but that's definitely an element," Melfy said. "There's so many new girls and they're all getting along great and gelling well as people. That's a great start. When we start to gel better on the court, I know we'll have better outcomes. We're still trying to learn each other and each other's tendencies. Chemistry is huge and I don't think we have it quite yet. But I'm looking forward to the day that we do."

Defensively, Fort Lewis had three players finish with double-digit dig totals, led by freshman libero Kamryn Lopez with 13. Senior outside hitter Ohiyah Shirley and Karr followed with 12 digs and 10 digs, respectively, while freshman setter Payton Harmann added eight digs to go with her 20 assists.

The Skyhawks will now turn their attention toward Saturday's road matchup against Chadron State College (7-2 overall, 1-0 RMAC), set to get underway at 6 p.m. inside Chicoine Center.

"No days in between matches does give us a chance to get back on the court maybe a little bit frustrated, a little bit angry and ready to show what we really can do," Melfy said. "Chadron State is playing with some excitement and enthusiasm. That can go a long way with a team that knows each other well and has a lot of returners. They're playing with a lot of confidence and that will be the biggest challenge for us."
