Skyhawks take positive step in tight loss to Chadron State

Box Score CHADRON, Nebraska — The final score won't tell the whole story of Saturday night's RMAC matchup between the Fort Lewis College volleyball team and Chadron State College.

Playing on the second night of a back-to-back, the Skyhawks fell in three tight sets against the Eagles (28-26, 28-26 and 25-21), but produced a staggering 52 kills and 81 in the process in what was a huge turnaround for the team after a disappointing loss Friday evening against Metropolitan State University of Denver.

"I'm so proud of the girls. That was such a great response after (Friday) night," said Fort Lewis head coach, Tricia Melfy. "We just quadrupled everything; our energy, our stats and our competitive spirit. There was no quit or let down. We were just a little short here and there. It was a great match on both sides."

Fort Lewis (4-7 overall, 0-2 RMAC) was just a few points away from flipping the script on Chadron State (8-2 overall, 2-0 RMAC) as the Skyhawks held a 24-23 lead in Set One, and a 26-25 advantage in Set Two, but were unable to score the elusive set point.

"It came down to two things. Chadron literally had four less errors than us and in close sets decided by two points, those were part of it," Melfy said. "Also, there were a few times late in the sets where we were out of position. We were a little anxious, defensively, late in the sets."

The Skyhawks had a number of standout performances Saturday, led by senior middle blocker Bailey Longacre as she posted her second straight match with a hitting percentage over .500.

Longacre powered down a season-high 18 kills on 31 swings, tying her career-high previously set on Nov. 7, 2016 against Westminster.

Junior transfer Chandler Karr also tallied a career-high 11 kills from the outside hitter position, while fellow junior transfer Alexa Treguboff was just one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and a career-high 21 digs.

"Bailey was off the charts," Melfy said. "She was incredible and so was Alexa Treguboff, nearly pulling off the double-double. Statistically, we were 10 times better than we were Friday."

Treguboff was one of five Skyhawks to finish with double-digit dig totals as freshman defensive specialist Kamryn Lopez popped up 19 digs, while Karr added 13 digs and the freshmen duo of setter Payton Harmann and defensive specialist Joviana Romero added 12 digs and 10 digs, respectively

Harmann also finished one assist off her career high Saturday as she produced 43 assists to go with her 12 digs and six kills.

Fort Lewis will look to build off Saturday's positives as it prepares for a four-match home stand, starting at 7 p.m. Friday against Colorado School of Mines.

"We needed a match like (Saturday) just for some confidence, get the morale up and get the belief that we are going to be good," Melfy said. "We've talked about chemistry and you need matches like this to start really getting to know each other and I think that's going to help us moving forward. You hate to lose. But at the same time, when you play that well and make a team find a way to beat you, it's not the worst loss in the world."
