Fort Lewis remains unbeaten, wraps up road trip with 2-0 win over Metro State

DENVER, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team wrapped up a spotless road trip to Denver on Sunday, putting a bow on a six-point weekend with a 2-0 victory over Metropolitan State University of Denver.

The clean sheet against the Roadrunners (3-5 overall, 1-3 RMAC) marked the third straight shutout for the undefeated Skyhawks (5-0-3 overall, 3-0-1 RMAC), who have also blanked Adams State (Sept. 22) and Colorado Christian (Sept. 27) during their current three-game win streak.

"It was great to get six points on the weekend, two clean sheets on the road, and I think just two overall good performances," said Fort Lewis head coach, David Oberholtzer. "I thought we played really well (Sunday). We continued to create chances, we didn't give up much defensively, and it was just a good overall performance."

Fort Lewis, which finished with a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal, broke through in the 34th minute on one of its seven corner kick opportunities for the game when senior defenseman Marshall Metzger headed in a feed from fellow senior captain, Ty Lang.

The goal was the first of the season for Metzger, while the assist was Lang's second helper of 2019.

"We had been knocking on the door for awhile there in the first half. We earned a corner kick and Marshall just rose above everybody for the header. A really great individual effort from him there," Oberholtzer said. "To be honest, I thought Marshall had one of his best games in a Fort Lewis uniform. He was super solid and made really good decisions on and off the ball."

The Skyhawks would add their second tally late in the second half as, after sustained pressure in front of the Roadrunners' net, junior transfer Kacey Owensby finished off a loose ball in the box for his first goal of the season.

Owensby's goal came at the 71:54 mark and broke a string of four games for the Skyhawks where they had scored one goal or less.

"It was a good team goal. Loic (Jean-Baptiste) jumped on a bobble by the goalkeeper and put a shot on target that deflected off a defender. Kacey was right there to follow it up and put it away," Oberholtzer said. "It was great to get that second goal and a little bit of breathing room. But it was also great to see the way with got it with a great run of play and getting people in front of the goal."

Defensively, Fort Lewis limited Metro State to nine total shots, two on goal stopped by redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Peter Byrne, and three corner kicks en route to the team's fifth shutout through eight games so far this season.

The Skyhawks, currently third in the RMAC standings with 10 conference points, now turn their attention toward a pair of pivotal games against RMAC co-leaders Westminster College (3:30 p.m. Friday) and fourth-place Dixie State University (2:30 p.m. Sunday) during Homecoming weekend.

"It's going to be an awesome weekend and the focus for us is to stay mentally focused. We had a similar fast start last year and it was at this time, games against Westminster and Dixie State, where we started to fall apart a little bit," Oberholtzer said. "That's been the message to the team. 'This is where we fell apart last year, are we going to be resilient enough and tough enough to battle through and get results out of this weekend and keep the momentum moving forward for us?'"
