Skyhawks bounce back with 64-55 road win over Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday, shaking off a disappointing loss Friday down in Colorado Springs with a convincing 64-55 road victory over the Colorado School of Mines.

Fort Lewis (11-3 overall, 7-2 RMAC) dictated the action from the opening tip, jumping out to a 13-8 lead through the first quarter.

"It was a big bounce-back game. Our girls knew as we played (Friday) that we weren't playing our brand of basketball," said FLC head coach Orlando Griego, referencing Friday's 62-48 loss to UCCS. "I knew were we going to come out fired up, energetic and ready to play. It was huge for us to get a lead early, play with that lead and remain poised."

The Skyhawks were keyed by a suffocating effort on the defensive end of the floor, limiting the Orediggers (8-5 overall, 5-4 RMAC) to a dismal 29% shooting (17-of-58) night from the field.

Spearheading that effort was junior guard Sydney Candelaria as she drew the assignment of guarding the RMAC leading scorer Pinto Denali.

Denali was held to 18 points on 17 shots, including just 2-of-10 from beyond the 3-point line.

"Sydney's defense on one of the best scoring players in the conference was outstanding," Griego said. "Even though Denali finished with 18 points, that was a really hard 18 points. Sydney did a great job guarding her and making it tough for her to get shots at the basket."

Candelaria would also added six rebounds, three assists and 10 points on the offensive end, joining fellow juniors Katrina Chandler and Jordan Carter as the three Skyhawks in double-figures.

Chandler continued her sensational start to 2020 as she tied her career-high with 21 points to lead all scorers, doing the bulk of her damaging getting to the rim as she was 12-of-17 from the free-throw line and 3-of-4 from inside the 3-point arc.

As for Carter, the FLC forward tied her season-high with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and was just one rebound shy of a double-double.

"They did a great job of executing our offense. We really wanted to get the ball in to Jordan or get into a pick-and-roll situation with Katrina," Griego said. "Our game plan was to really be aggressive, get to the foul line and see the ball go in. Katrina was attacking and getting defenders on her hip, same with Jordan."

Fort Lewis would build its cushion in the third quarter, ballooning a 25-21 halftime lead into a 12-point advantage at 47-35 entering the fourth after senior guard Kaitlyn Romero cashed in a late 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The Skyhawks would have to weather a late storm from the Orediggers as CSM climbed back within three points at 58-55 with 2:11 remaining, but Chandler and Carter would seal the victory with six free throws down the stretch to put a bow on the 64-55 final.

As a team, FLC finished 23-of-34 (68%) from the free-throw line and were 18-of-47 (38%) from the field.

The Skyhawks will look to build off of Saturday's victory when they resume their four-game road swing next weekend against Western Colorado University (9-4 overall, 7-2 RMAC) and Colorado Mesa University (13-2 overall, 9-0 RMAC).
