FLC rolls to 88-74 road win over Western Colorado

GUNNISON, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak in emphatic fashion on Friday, steamrolling Western Colorado University, 88-74, to spoil White Out Night inside Paul Wright Gymnasium.

"We wanted to play well and we've got a lot of pride in our program. We haven't had a lot of three-game losing streaks over the years and we played a lot of good teams last week," said Fort Lewis head coach, Bob Pietrack. "We wanted to play well and our guys were focused on getting back in the win column."

Fort Lewis (11-5 overall, 5-5- RMAC) dictated the action from the opening tap, carrying a 41-28 lead over Western Colorado (6-10 overall, 3-7 RMAC) at the half after finishing the first 20 minutes on a 12-0 blitz over the final 4:11.

Redshirt junior Riley Farris mauled the Mountaineers front court for 21 of his game-high 27 points in the first half on a blistering 9-of-11 shooting. He'd add eight rebounds, tying junior guard Will Wittman for the team lead.

"We like all matchups with Riley. Offensively, he's a very special player and when they doubled him (Friday), we were able to find the open man and make the extra pass," Pietrack. "The rest of our guys responded. I thought Logan Hokanson played well, Corey Seng gave us great minutes and Junior Garbrah made shots."

Hokanson joined Farris as one of four Skyhawks in double-figures with 10 points and posted a career-high nine assists, while Garbrah tallied 13 points and senior guard Danny Garrick chipped in 11 points.

Seng added three points, three steals and four rebounds in his 21 minutes. Redshirt sophomore Brenden Boatwright finished with nine points and five rebounds and freshman guard Akuel Kot scored nine points to aid the FLC attack.

Defensively, the Skyhawks limited the Mountaineers to a pedestrian 28 points on 37% (11-of-30) in the first half to compliment an offense that hung 41 points on 47% (15-of-32) shooting.

"To hold them to 28 first-half points; that's about as good as we can do," Pietrack said. "Our guys were very much together. Everybody is going to go through ups and downs in this league and getting road wins in this league are like gold."

FLC continued to pour it on in the second half, pushing its lead to 20 points on six different occasions to erase any potential comeback opportunity for WCU.

Up next for the Skyhawks will be a tough Saturday night test against rival Colorado Mesa University (11-5 overall, 7-3 RMAC). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. out in Grand Junction.

"We're going into a hornet's nest tomorrow," Pietrack said. "We're going to have to play our best game tomorrow night. Mesa got Ethan Richardson, a transfer from West Virginia, at semester and he's outstanding. We're going to have to play really well."
