Pair of runs helps Skyhawks roll to 63-46 win over Regis

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team opened a four-game home stand in fine fashion on Friday, using a big second-quarter effort and 14-0 run in the third quarter to roll to a 63-46 victory over Regis University.

"It was a great team win for us. We rebounded the ball well, I thought we played pretty good perimeter defense for 38 minutes," said Fort Lewis head coach, Orlando Griego. "Overall, it was a really big team win."

Fort Lewis (12-5 overall, 8-4 RMAC) outscored the visiting Rangers (7-11 overall, 5-7 RMAC) by a 17-7 margin in the second quarter, including a 9-0 burst through the first 4:36 to build a 24-11 lead en route to owning a 32-18 advantage at the half.

Regis would briefly crawl back within six, forcing a FLC timeout at the 7:02 mark with the score 32-26. But the Skyhawks would respond with vengeance, rattling off a 14-0 blitz over the next four minutes that ballooned their lead to 20 at 46-26.

"They do a really good job of responding when we call a timeout," Griego said, referring to his players. "We really challenged them and it's a credit to the girls. They knew they weren't playing to the best of their ability. We called a quick time out, we adjust and then we make a run. It speaks volumes on their maturity."

The offense came in waves for the Skyhawks as they had nine different players score on the night, two in double-figures with junior forward Jordan Carter and senior guard Kaitlyn Romero.

Carter paced all FLC players with 11 points to go with six rebounds, while Romero added 10 points and two of the Skyhawks' eight steals in her 28 minutes.

Junior guards Sydney Candelaria and Bailey Osmer, who received her second start of the season on Friday, each tallied eight points. Fellow junior Chloe Warrington flirted with a double-double, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds.

The eight rebounds were a FLC career high for Warrington, who also played a season-high 28 minutes in the victory. As a team, the Skyhawks outrebounded the Rangers, 51-46.

"(Rebounding) was a big focus. Coach said that Regis averages at least 40 rebounds a game. In order for me to get in the game, he tells me I have to rebound. It finally flipped the switch a little bit," Warrington said.

Senior guard Kayla Herrera-Flores led the rebounding effort with nine boards to go with four points and a team best plus/minus rating of +19.

Fort Lewis, which snapped a mini two-game losing skid on Friday following tough matchups against Western Colorado and RMAC leaders Colorado Mesa, will look to build off the positive momentum heading into Saturday's 5:30 p.m. clash against Colorado Christian University (6-12 overall, 6-6 RMAC).

"Road trips are always tough, but I think that road trip really taught us a lot," Romero said. "It taught us to go into every game with a strong mentality that we can win and that we can play with the best."
