Fort Lewis claims first RMAC weekend sweep of the season with 95-87 win over Colorado Christian

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team crossed off a new "first" on Saturday, earning a much-needed 95-87 victory over Colorado Christian University to give the Skyhawks their first RMAC weekend sweep of 2019-2020.

"We've had some good weekends, but weren't able to get both games on any of those weekends. This was our first time getting both, which was critical," said Fort Lewis College head coach, Bob Pietrack. "It didn't look that pretty; the win. But it's like baseball, if it bloops in it's still a hit. We'll be very thankful that it's a line drive in scorebook and we're going to take it."

Leading the way was redshirt junior forward Riley Farris with a game-high 26 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He also added six rebounds, three assists and was a perfect 14-of-14 from the free-throw line.

As a team, the Skyhawks (13-6 overall, 7-6 RMAC) feasted at the stripe, finishing 36-of-43 (84%) to help supplement the offense with tired legs on the second night of a back-to-back. The Cougars (1-18 overall, 1-12 RMAC) were 10-of-12 (83%) from the free-throw line.

"I think it's a big boost for everyone to knock down free throws because they're such a key point on Saturdays," said Farris, whose team improved to 4-4 overall on the second night of back-to-backs with the victory.

Fort Lewis also received key contributions from upperclassmen Logan Hokanson and Danny Garrick as Hokanson poured in a career-high 20 points, which included a 10-0 scoring run by the junior point guard that bumped the FLC lead from 74-69 to 84-69 with 2:19 remaining.

"As our team has been improving, we've won three out of our last four, a lot of it has to do with Hokanson's improvement," Pietrack said. "We played almost the whole first semester without our starting point guard and people forget that. As he continues to improve, our team will improve."

As for Garrick, the senior sharpshooter busted out of a slump with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting to snap a streak of three out of the last four games being held to single-digits.

"I've been struggling a bit these last couple games so it felt good to get my shot and felt good to get a win," said Garrick, who also added four rebounds and a blocked shot on the evening.

Freshman guard Akuel Kot was the fourth Skyhawk in double-figures as he tallied 14 points and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Junior guard Will Wittman continued his strong play with eight points, eight rebounds and a team-high four assists, while redshirt sophomore Brenden Boatwright chipped in six points off the bench.

As a team, the Skyhawks finished the night a scorching 26-of-47 from the field (57%) compared to 32-of-73 (44%) for the Cougars, which included a 15-of-38 (39%) mark from the floor over the final 20 minutes.

Fort Lewis will now turn its attention toward another difficult two-game slate as it plays host to Dixie State University (16-3 overall, 11-2 RMAC) and Westminster College (12-7 overall, 7-6 RMAC) next weekend.

Dixie State is currently ranked No. 23 in the NABC Coaches Poll and will enter Friday night's game atop the RMAC standings.

"You don't get a nationally ranked team to come to your building very often. They're obviously where they're at in the league because they are very good," Pietrack said of Dixie State. "It'll be a great challenge, but a challenge I think our team will be ready for."
