Skyhawks unable to overcome 60% 3-point shooting from CCU in 84-79 road loss

LAKEWOOD, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling by an 84-79 final on the road to a red-hot shooting Colorado Christian University team.

CCU (1-2 overall, 1-2 RMAC) shot a blistering 60% (15-of-25) from behind the 3-point line and scored 52 second-half points to pull away in a wild, back-and-forth affair with the Skyhawks (2-1 overall, 1-1 RMAC) that featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes.

"We gave up way too made 3-pointers and that was the difference in the ballgame," said FLC head coach, Bob Pietrack. "We've got to get a lot better, we're a work in progress. CCU is a tough team to guard considering they don't have a true No. 5 (center). I thought a lot of the 3-pointers they made were contested, but we still need to get better, defensively."

Fort Lewis would out-shoot the Cougars on the night, finishing at 48.3% (28-of-58) from the field compared to a 26-of-56 (46.4%) mark for CCU. But the difference came from beyond the arc where the Skyhawks finished 6-of-20 (30%), and a pedestrian 17-of-23 (73.9) mark at the free-throw line.

FLC had entered the evening shooting 52.1% from the field, 41.7% from 3-point range and 79.5% from the free-throw line through its first two wins against Western Colorado University.

"We missed a couple front ends of 1-and-1 that really hurt us and didn't shoot the ball particularly well," Pietrack said. "But it really came down to us not being able to stop (CCU) from making threes."

Despite the barrage from deep for the Cougars, the Skyhawks did put themselves in a position to win the game as they took a 77-74 lead with 2:09 remaining after senior Will Wittman cashed in a three-point play opportunity off an assist from fellow senior Riley Farris.

Wittman's dunk plus the foul gave him a season-high 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting; all coming in the second half.

Unfortunately for FLC, the Cougars countered with a quick 8-1 burst to retake the lead for good at 82-78 with 16 seconds remaining.

Farris joined Wittman with 15 points to lead all FLC scorers, while adding four rebounds, three assists and two blocks in his 30 minutes.

Sophomore guard Akuel Kot scored 12 of his 14 points to help the Skyhawks build a 37-32 lead at the half, while redshirt junior forward Brenden Boatwright scored 11 second-half points off the bench to round out the four Skyhawks in double-figures.

Senior guard Corey Seng added nine points and a team-high five rebounds, and sophomore guard Dunnell Stafford chipped in eight points and a season-high six assists off the bench.

Fort Lewis now turns its attention toward a pair of road conference games next weekend to conclude its current four-game road swing.

The Skyhawks face Regis University at 8 p.m. on Friday before concluding the fall semester portion of its schedule at 7 p.m. Saturday in Golden against No. 8 ranked Colorado School of Mines.

"Every game on the road is extremely hard, so we have to get back to the drawing board and figure out a way to tighten up our defense," Pietrack said.
