Vasquez records fifth career double-double, but Skyhawks fall 75-63 on the road to Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colorado — A dry spell in the third quarter created a hole the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team couldn't climb out of on Saturday, falling 75-63 on the road to Colorado School of Mines.

With the game tied 37-37 at the 7:14 mark of the third quarter, a lid went on the basket for the Skyhawks (1-3 overall, 1-3 RMAC) as they were limited to five points — all free throws — and committed six turnovers the remainder of the quarter.

Colorado School of Mines (4-1 overall, 3-1 RMAC) took advantage as the Orediggers closed the quarter on a 19-5 blitz to take a 56-42 lead going into the fourth.

"That was the difference maker right there," said FLC head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "They went on a pretty good run off our turnovers and not being able to score the ball when we needed to. (CSM) is a good basketball team and well coached. I'm looking forward to watching the film, but I think we were just trying to play too quick or we were giving up rebounds."

Sophomore forward Jordan Vasquez did all she could to help bring the Skyhawks back, pouring in 11 of her career-high 25 points in the fourth quarter. Her put-back with 4:35 remaining brought FLC back within single digits at 64-55, but the Orediggers responded with a 7-0 burst over the next 2:27 to keep the Skyhawks at bay.

The Farmington, New Mexico native also added a season-high 13 rebounds on Saturday — eight on the offensive glass — to record her first double-double of the season and fifth of her young career.

She is currently averaging 22.3 points and 8.5 rebounds through the Skyhawks' first four games.

"Jordan's work ethic has been phenomenal. She works hard and competes at a high level," Griego said of Vasquez, who averaged 12.1 points and 6.6 rebounds as a freshman. "She worked extremely hard over the summer and has come into this year even stronger. She's letting the game come to her."

Vasquez was joined in double-figures by seniors Bailey Osmer and Chloe Warrington as the duo added 11 points apiece.

All 11 points for Warrington came in the first half, shooting 4-of-5 from the floor through the game's first 20 minutes; including a deep 3-pointer with 2:32 remaining in the second quarter that gave the Skyhawks their last lead at 28-27.

"We were really struggling from that 3-point line, but Chloe came in and we were doing a great job of finding her," Griego said. "She was really feeling it and letting it fly. Chloe did a great job for us and I'm really proud of her."

Senior point guard Katrina Chandler, who scored a career-high 21 points in a 64-55 road win over the Orediggers last season, added nine points and six assists on Saturday.

As a team, the Skyhawks shot an even 40% (20-for-50) from the floor compared to 46.8% (29-of-62) for the Orediggers. FLC won the rebounding battle 38-30, but committing 19 turnovers to just 12 giveaways for Colorado School of Mines.

Fort Lewis, which has opened the 2020-21 season with three of its first four games against top-5 RMAC opponents, has two weeks off for the holiday break before returning to action Sunday, Jan. 3 at home against South Dakota School of Mines (1-4 overall, 1-4 RMAC).

Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. inside Whalen Gymnasium.

"The biggest thing for us right now is being consistent and putting four quarters together. We've had a few games where we've played well for three quarters or a half, but just haven't been consistent on offense or defense for a whole game yet," Griego said. "We're still very confident in our group and one thing I love is our ability to never quit. I told the team that these first few games have been a good measuring stick for where we're at amongst some of the top teams in our conference. We're right there and I firmly believe that."
