Skyhawks conclude road trip with tight 66-59 loss to Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team made a second-half surge, but were unable to complete its comeback attempt Saturday evening in a 66-59 road loss to Dixie State University.

Fort Lewis (15-9 overall, 11-8 RMAC) received a season-high 21 points from junior forward Jordan Carter and 16 points off the bench from freshman forward Jordan Vasquez on what was otherwise a tough night from the field for the Skyhawks.

FLC shot 19-of-55 (35%) and were just 6-of-24 (25%) in the first half, spotting Dixie State (16-9 overall, 11-8)  a 33-23 lead heading into the break.

"We didn't shoot the ball very well tonight. I thought we were able to generate some really good looks, but we weren't able to knock those down in really key moments," said Fort Lewis head coach, Orlando Griego. "We fought hard to get back in the game in the second half and then when we had some big possessions with open shots, the ball just wasn't going in for us."

The Skyhawks made their climb back into the ballgame during the third quarter as Carter scored nine points in the quarter, and 15 points in the second half, while Vasquez added six points in the frame to bring FLC back within four entering the fourth at 47-43.

FLC was also aided by its 14-4 advantage in offensive rebounds and its ability to get to the foul line, finishing the night 19-of-24 at the charity stripe versus Dixie State's 10-of-13.

"The two Jordans were really battling down low and we wanted to keep going to them," Griego said. "We had Dixie State in some foul trouble and we liked our matchups inside. We were getting really good touches with two feet in the paint."

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, they were unable to get much going on the perimeter as they finished 2-of-15 from the 3-point line, while Dixie State nailed eight 3-pointers.

"Dixie was bringing a double-team, or sometimes just had some extra hands around the paint, which was leaving people open," Griego said. "If we were able to make some of those perimeter jump shots, I really do think outcome could have been a little better for us."

Senior guard Kayla Herrera-Flores posted eight points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals Saturday, while fellow senior Kaitlyn Romero chipped in five points and two rebounds.

Following a four-game road jaunt, Fort Lewis will now return home for its final two home games of the season against No. 19 ranked Colorado Mesa University (5:30 p.m. Friday) and Western Colorado University (5:30 p.m. Saturday).

The Skyhawks are a dominating 13-1 this season inside the friendly confines of Whalen Gymnasium.

"The biggest thing for us is staying together and focus on taking care of business at home," Griego said. "We've done a really good job of protecting home court. We're really close to being a really good team with all the games we've played down to the final buzzer. We still have to work on some things to make sure we're putting ourselves in better positions to win games."
