Farris and Wittman set career highs, but Skyhawks fall to Adams State to conclude 2019-2020 season

ALAMOSA, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team had its 2019-2020 season come to an end Friday evening out in Alamosa, falling in the final seconds, 94-92, to Adams State University.

Redshirt junior forward Riley Farris and junior guard Will Wittman each had career nights for the Skyhawks, helping the team crawl back from a 19-point first-half deficit. But the comeback effort fell just shy as ASU's Juwan Green got his driving layup to fall with less than two seconds remaining to deliver the dagger.

"We just didn't make the winning plays down the stretch," said Fort Lewis head coach, Bob Pietrack. "In these last nine games, we've been in every ballgame. Every game could have gone our way, but we didn't find ways to win."

Fort Lewis (13-15 overall, 7-15 RMAC) trailed 61-45 at the half, but ratcheted up the defensive intensity early in the second half to go on a 17-3 run, which at one point included 12 straight points for the Skyhawks, to get back with two at 73-71 on a layup by Farris with 10:09 remaining.

Farris tied his career high with 36 points on 13-of-23 shooting, matching the 36 he scored against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs back on Jan. 10. He'd set a career high with 14 rebounds to complete his fourth double-double of the season.

Wittman poured in a career-high 24 points on a blistering 10-of-12 shooting and grabbed seven rebounds, including a crucial defensive board with 38 seconds remaining and the Skyhawks holding a 92-90 lead.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, a missed shot and run-out for Adams State (8-20 overall, 6-16 RMAC) tied the score. On the ensuing FLC possession, junior Corey Seng, who gave FLC its 92-90 lead with a pair of free throws, was called for a travel with five seconds remaining to give ASU the final possession of regulation.

Junior point guard Logan Hokanson finished with nine points and seven assists, while sophomore Brendan La Rose and redshirt sophomore Brenden Boatwright each added eight points to help pace the Skyhawks.

As a team, FLC outshot the Grizzlies on Friday as the Skyhawks were 36-of-74 (49%) compared to ASU's mark of 30-for-66 (46%). Adams State made up for that at the charity stripe, where it finished 25-of-31 (81%) compared to FLC at 13-of-15 (87%).

With the loss of just one senior (Danny Garrick) to graduation this spring, Pietrack said the Skyhawks will now turn their attention toward adding some pieces and coming back strong in 2020-2021.

"We've got a lot of great pieces coming back that we can really work with. We need to add to this team because we're just a few players away from being really good," Pietrack said. "We're young and a lot of our guys gained experience this year. We'll add to it and get better."
