Skyhawks split series opening doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College softball team opened a four-game set against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, earning a split of the doubleheader with a 5-2 victory in the opener, and a tight 9-8 loss in a wild Game Two.

Fort Lewis (7-9 overall, 4-2 RMAC) began the day with a dominating performance in the pitching circle from redshirt junior Mandy Lorenson, who mowed over a powerful Orediggers lineup (7-8 overall, 4-2 RMAC) en route to picking up her first win of the season.

Lorenson tossed all seven innings and limited CSM to two runs on three hits — only one hit through the game's first six innings — and struck out eight without issuing a walk.

"Mandy pitched really well today and I'm very proud of her. She worked ahead and that's what can happen when you work ahead in the count," said FLC head coach, Ashley Reeves. "She was in control the entire game and it was great to see."

The FLC right-hander had a lead to work with early as the Skyhawks tallied an unearned run in the second inning before freshman designated player Brianna Leavell launched her second career home run in the third inning; a two-run shot that bumped the Skyhawks' lead to 3-0.

Leavell, who leads the Skyhawks in the early going with a .455 average and team-high 19 RBI through 16 games, added a RBI double down the right-field line in the fifth, scoring junior McKenna Hefley to make it a 4-1 advantage. The freshman finished 2-for-4 with three RBI in Game One.

Senior first baseman Kelly Decker would drive in Leavell for the Skyhawks' fifth run and finished 2-for-3 in Game One.

The duo of Decker and Leavell would each add multi-hit performances in Game Two, as well, with Decker clubbing a two-run double during what would be a five-run, seventh-inning rally for the Skyhawks.

FLC trailed 5-0 through the game's first two innings, and faced a 7-3 deficit heading to the top of the seventh before junior second baseman Pilar Gutierrez got the comeback started with a leadoff single.

Gutierrez was a spotless 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot in Game Two and 6-for-8 with three runs scored on the day. The four hits set a career-high for the Peoria, Arizona native.

"I'm super proud of Pilar. We moved her up into the leadoff spot and she did exactly what we needed her to do," Reeves said. "She scored runs, put the ball in play and was on fire."

Following the single by Pilar, the next five Skyhawks would all reach base, capped by the double from Decker, who'd then score the go-ahead two batters later on a sacrifice fly from sophomore first baseman Mackenzie Parks.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, the Orediggers would put together a seventh inning rally of their own as a single and RBI double in succession pulled CSM back even with FLC at 8-8.

With one out and a runner on third, Colorado School of Mines would secure the walk-off win following a flyout from Clara Larson and an errant throw from the outfield, allowing Stefanie Brunello to scamper home with the winning run.

"I was so proud of the girls in the top-half of the inning. They passed the baton, offensively, and didn't get too big with their swings. We had to score five runs to take the lead and we did it, so the fight was great to see," Reeves said. "It sucks losing the way that we did, but that happens, unfortunately. The runner from third wasn't going (to home plate) and was kind of in no-man's land. But our cut-offs weren't where they needed to be. It was just a team mistake. If we're where we are suppose to be, that run doesn't score."

The Skyhawks will now turn their attention toward Sunday's twin bill against the Orediggers to close out the series. Due to afternoon weather concerns, game times have been pushed up to 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. Sunday.

"We want to go and take two games tomorrow, head back home 3-1 on the weekend," Reeves said. "That's our goal. We have the offense and pitching to do it, we just have to step up a little bit and make sure we get it done."
