FLC softball earns a Saturday split, finishes 2-3 at Courtyard Classic

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Fort Lewis College softball team wrapped up its first road trip of 2020, earning a split Saturday on the final day of the Courtyard Classic, hosted by Dixie State University.

Fort Lewis (2-3 overall) began the day with a 5-4 victory over Montana State University-Billings (5-6 overall), before falling 11-0 to Northwest Nazarene University (7-3 overall) in the nightcap.

Freshman pitcher Brianna Leavell continued the impressive start to her collegiate career as she pitched all seven innings en route to picking up her first win as a pitcher, and helped her own cause with the bat by going 1-for-3 with two runs driven in.

Through the first five games, Leavell is 1-0 in three appearances with a 2.63 earned run average and 16 strikeouts in 13.1 innings, while also batting .357 with a team-high four RBI in the early going.

It was a fellow freshman who got things started for the Skyhawks in the win over MSU-Billings as Sloan Shotton came off the bench and drilled a pinch-hit, two-run home run to center field in the top of the fifth inning.

Fort Lewis added three more runs when senior Taylor Hollestelle reached on an outfield error, scoring junior Hannah Gondini from third base. One batter later, Leavell deposited a two-run single down the right-field line to score Hollestelle and junior infielder Pilar Gutierrez.

The Skyhawks would need those extra insurance runs as MSU-Billings struck for four runs in the home-half of the seventh inning to provide some concern, but Leavell was able to put the inning to bed by inducing a pop-up to end the ballgame.

Leavell finished with a final line of seven innings pitched, four earned runs on three hits, three walks and eight strikeouts.

Senior outfielder Cassie Sloan finished 2-for-3, while juniors Julia Roberts, Kylie Hefley and McKenna Hefley all added base hits in the win.

As for Game Two, the Skyhawks were unable to get the bases going against Northwest Nazarene University, finishing the ballgame with four singles, courtesy of Leavell, Gutierrez, Hollestelle and McKenna Hefley.

Junior catcher Taylor Beaman added a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base to round out the FLC offense.

NNU used two big innings to capture the win, jumping in front 3-0 in the top of the first inning before putting the game away with an eight-run third.

FLC senior Kelly Decker pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits and striking out four to lead the pitching corp.

The Skyhawks will now return home, rest up and prepare for another five-game tournament next weekend at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona.

First up for FLC will be matchups against Southern Nazarene University (10 a.m.) and Texas Permian Basin (12:30 p.m.) on Friday.
