FLC women's basketball falls on the road to Regis in 55-52 heart-breaker

DENVER, Colorado — A few possessions were the difference between a 2-0 and an 0-2 road trip for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team as the Skyhawks were on the short-end of another one-possession game Saturday for the second time in as many nights.

Fort Lewis fell by a final score of 55-52 to Regis University, on the heels of a tight 74-72 loss in overtime Friday on a buzzer-beater for Colorado Christian University.

"I think it comes down to we just have to be a little more consistent. That's the biggest thing we're learning, especially on the road," said FLC head coach Orlando Griego, whose team entered the weekend on a four-game winning streak. "We had a one-possession game tonight, one-possession game last night and had a one-possession game on the road against (RMAC leaders) Colorado Mesa. We're showing we can compete and contend. Now we just need to be able to finish consistently."

The Skyhawks (15-7 overall, 11-6 RMAC) had two looks in the final 20 seconds to try and send the game into overtime, but had a 3-point attempt from Chloe Warrington and a last second trey from junior Sydney Candelaria miss long.

"We felt like Chloe was able to get her shot off, and when she got challenged, she got hit on her arm. The official was there, but he didn't call the foul, which at the end of the day still doesn't boil down to why we lost," Griego said. "We had another chance and were looking for someone to come off a good screen, get a clean look and try to send it to overtime."

Fort Lewis put itself in position for the potential game-tying looks by forcing two key turnovers by Regis (10-13 overall, 8-9 RMAC) on in-bounds plays, the last turnover coming with 7.1 seconds remaining to set up the look for Candelaria.

It was part of a fourth-quarter comeback that saw the Skyhawks rally back from being down eight at 51-43 with 5:57 remaining after Regis had opened the quarter on a 10-2 blitz.

"We had to burn a timeout and settle everyone down. But our girls did a nice job responding," Griego said. "We knew we had plenty of time left in the game to make our run, which we were able to do to make it a one-possession game again to give ourselves a chance to win."

Candelaria, who recorded her second career double-double in as many games, led all Skyhawks with 14 points and 11 rebounds, with six of her points coming in the fourth quarter to keep FLC in reach.

Junior forward Jordan Carter added 12 points and five rebounds, while the guard tandem of Kayla Herrera-Flores and Katrina Chandler chipped in eight points and seven points, respectively. Herrera-Flores would also finish with a team-high four steals on the defensive end.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well on a night dominated by defense as FLC finished 21-of-64 (33%) and Regis ended the evening 22-of-63 (35%) from the field.

A key difference came from beyond the 3-point line, where the Skyhawks were 3-of-16 (19%) compared to a 9-of-29 (31%) mark for the Rangers.

"At halftime we really wanted to make sure that our posts were doing a good on the block defending and I thought we were doing that, but there were just a couple assignments that we missed that led to an open three," Griego said. "Regis made nine 3-pointers and of those nine, I'd say that about six were uncontested with our hands down. And that's a big difference in college basketball."

Fort Lewis, now sitting in a tie for fifth place in the RMAC standings with Black Hills State University, will look to shake off the weekend and get ready for next weekend's road trip against Westminster College (5:30 p.m. Friday) and Dixie State (5:30 p.m. Saturday).

The Skyhawks defeated both teams two weekends ago in Durango with a 65-56 victory against DSU and 74-72 win over the previously nationally ranked Griffins.

"Biggest thing for us now is to regroup, stay positive and learn from our mistakes," Griego said. "I think we're so close to being a really good team. We just need to prove we can win on the road and be more consistent. But we're close."
