Four players finish in double-figures, but Skyhawks fall on the road to Regis

DENVER, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team was unable to complete a second-half comeback attempt Saturday evening, falling 90-77 on the road to Regis University.

Fort Lewis (13-10 overall, 7-10 RMAC) had four players finish in double-figures, led by 17 points from redshirt junior Riley Farris and 16 points from junior point guard Logan Hokanson.

Senior forward Danny Garrick poured in 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from behind the 3-point line while junior guard Will Wittman added 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting, upping his team-leading 3-point shooting percentage to 53% (32-of-61).

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, the Cougars (14-9 overall, 9-8 RMAC) had four players in double-figures of their own and shot 52% (35-of-67) from the floor, led by the game-high 25 points for senior guard Christian Little on 11-of-16 shooting.

"I'm really proud of our guys for how hard we fought because we could have easily folded. We fought and fought, but Regis is an awfully good team," said FLC head coach Bob Pietrack. "Their senior (Little) really took over the game down the stretch. It's tough sledding for us right now, but all we can do is keep preparing, keep fighting and trying to get better."

Fort Lewis trailed 46-33 at the break, but were able to climb back within five points at 71-66 with 7:46 remaining on a deep trey cashed in by Garrick.

That's as close as the Skyhawks would inch, though, as Little scored 10 of his team's next 13 points as part of a 13-3 run to bump the lead back out to 15 at 84-69 at the 4:11 mark of the second half.

"Little was obviously special in the second half and there was that stretch there for about four minutes where he went off for 10 points," Pietrack said. "He was just very good tonight."

There were bright spots on the evening for the Skyhawks as redshirt sophomore Brenden Boatwright came off the bench to provide eight points and give rebounds in 13 minutes and Hokanson added six assists to go with his 16 points. He has now scored double-digits in six of the last eight games while averaging nearly six assists (5.75) in those contests.

"Hokanson has really had a good last three weeks and is starting to show the player we thought we were getting out of junior college," Pietrack said.

Junior guard Corey Seng also filled the stat sheet Saturday with five points, six rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot in his 26 minutes.

Fort Lewis will now return home, rest up and prepare for a challenging road trip next weekend against No. 22 ranked Dixie State University (7:30 p.m. Friday) and Westminster College (7:30 p.m. Saturday).

"Obviously, right now is a really tough time for us and the schedule isn't getting any easier. We have to figure out a way to put our best foot forward and get ready for the trip to Utah," said Pietrack, who added the team is focusing on taking baby-steps as they try to work themselves out of their current four-game funk.

"We're going to try to get better every four minutes when the media timeouts come, see if we can start putting together strong stretches of play to build some momentum… We have wonderful human beings on our team, coaches and players, who really care. We are all pulling in the same direction, but it's a matter of growing up together a little bit right now."
