Skyhawks three-game win streak snapped in 71-49 loss to Colorado Mesa

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team returned to Whalen Gymnasium on Friday for a mini two-game home stand, opening the weekend with a 71-49 loss to the visiting Colorado Mesa University Mavericks.

"Credit to Colorado Mesa. I thought they played great. They were aggressive and physical all night long and it took us awhile to respond," said FLC head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "They were consistent all night long and hats off to them."

The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Skyhawks (4-5 overall, 4-5 RMAC), while the Mavericks (10-3 overall, 10-3 RMAC) collected their 10th win behind a 26-point performance from guard Kylyn Rigsby.

The Skyhawks entered the evening shorthanded, without the services of senior guard Sydney Candelaria, the team's top perimeter defender out due to injury.

"(Sydney) is a defensive stopper and not having her was hard for us. We didn't have that grit out there, that toughness to really buckle down and defend," Griego said. "We missed her presence."

Colorado Mesa was able to build a 21-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, 10 points coming via Rigsby.

The Skyhawks would make their run back in the second quarter as they cut a 16-point deficit down to seven following a jumper from sophomore guard Alison Chanhthala to make the score 26-19.

FLC headed into the half within striking distance at 35-23, but had a difficult time getting the offense jump started again in the third quarter against a swarming and active Mavericks' defense as CMU built its advantage back up to 60-36 entering the fourth.

The Skyhawks finished the evening with 17 turnovers and shot 32.7% (16-of-49) from the field; their lowest amount of field goal makes on the season after three efficient performances during the win streak.

"(CMU) did a really good job of pressuring the person with the ball and they had really nice help-side defense. We were dribbling into that and I thought we utilized our dribble too much as opposed to moving the ball," Griego said. "That brought the second defender over and caused some turnovers of fumbling of the ball. It (the offense) didn't have a smooth feel to it tonight."

Sophomore forward Jordan Vasquez led all Skyhawks with 14 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, while senior forward Chloe Warrington provided a lift with a career-high 11 points, six rebounds and three assists in her 27 minutes off the bench.

"It started in practice this week. She got in the gym and really wanted to look at film," Griego said of Warrington. "She had a good confidence about her this week. I told her before the game I was going to lean on her and she would get more minutes than she normally has, and she did a great job tonight."

Chanhthala, junior guard Alyssa Adams and senior guard Katrina Chandler each added five points apiece to round out FLC's top scorers.

The Skyhawks will look to bounce back Saturday with a 4 p.m. matchup against Westminster College, a team FLC beat 74-72 in overtime last Feb. 1, 2020 when the Griffins were ranked No. 21 in the country.

"We have another tough game. It's not going to get any easier for us," Griego said. "The good thing about our team is we want to play against good competition and want to compete. I look forward to seeing us bounce back and think we will bounce back and be just fine."
