Legendre scores two goals, Byrne passes elite company in Skyhawks' 3-0 rout of CCU

DURANGO, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team opened RMAC conference play in style Friday, steamrolling a previously undefeated Colorado Christian University squad by a 3-0 final on an overcast and chilly day at Dirks Field.

"The guys put a great team performance together for 90 minutes. We stuck to the game plan and did what we needed to do," said FLC head men's soccer coach, David Oberholtzer. "I thought we were able to dictate the tempo of the game from the first minute to the last minute."

Fort Lewis improved to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the loss dropped the Cougars to 6-1 overall and 0-1 in league play. The victory also added to a dominating run the Skyhawks have had against the Cougars, with FLC leading the all-time series 52-5-2, including 35 straight wins in a streak that dates back to 2002.

After a quiet opening 20 minutes of feeling each other out, the Skyhawks got on the scoreboard first when freshman Tomas Duenes was fouled in the CCU box, setting up a penalty kick opportunity for fellow freshman Gabriel Legendre to net his first of two goals on the afternoon at the 23:45 mark.

The score from Legendre flipped the field in the Skyhawks' favor as they finished with a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal in the first half and a 16-10 advantage for the game.

"The way CCU was playing, they make it difficult for you to score goals because they are so organized and they defend deep, so there's not a lot of room to get behind," Oberholtzer said. "To be able to get that opening goal, forcing them to come out and expose themselves a little more, it was important and it led to more opportunities."

Legendre would cash in his second goal at the 51:14 mark — his team-leading five goal of the 2021 campaign — with a beautiful strike from 20 yards out following a cross from senior Brantley Bice.

Fort Lewis tacked on another insurance goal just 10 minutes later in the 62nd minute when Bice tallied his second goal of the season off a feed from freshman Georgi Stoyanov.

In net, senior goalkeeper Peter Byrne crossed off a few more milestones in what has been a tremendous career for the Missoula, Montana native as his two saves moved him into fourth all-time in program history with 268; passing Tom Meintzer (1991-93).

The clean sheet also moved Byrne into sole possession of fourth place in career shutouts with 19, passing his current goalkeepers coach and two-time NCAA Division II National Champion, Ryan Wirth, who played for the Skyhawks from 2009-2011.

"That's pretty cool and a testament to the history and tradition of the program, as well as the continued interest from our alums in the program," Oberholtzer said. "To have a prior goalkeeper who is still involved, it's a pretty cool story and accomplishment."

The Skyhawks will look to build off Friday's complete performance when they conclude the weekend with a 1 p.m. matchup against Colorado School of Mines (6-3 overall, 1-0 RMAC) on Sunday out at Dirks Field.

"Getting on the board with three points was obviously crucial, especially with as tough of a conference we have this year," Oberholtzer said. "We found ourselves in a similar situation last weekend where we won our Friday game and didn't play the way we should have on Sunday. That's the big conversation piece for us as a group. We've already moved on from this game and we're preparing for Sunday. The goal is to get six points on the weekend and that's what we need to do if we're going to be a serious contender and, in the conversation, to win a conference title."
