Skyhawks out-shoot Orediggers, but fall by 1-0 final to conclude weekend

DURANGO, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team wrapped up its opening weekend of RMAC action on Sunday, settling for a weekend split as Colorado School of Mines edged out a 1-0 final at Dirks Field.

It was an unfortunate result for Fort Lewis (4-4-1 overall, 1-1-0 RMAC), which owned a 10-7 shots and 4-2 shots on goal advantage on the afternoon.

Four of the last six matchups between the two RMAC rivals have been one-goal games.

"I thought our guys played fantastic and we were on our front foot from the first minute and controlled the game for the entirety of it," said FLC head men's soccer coach, David Oberholtzer. "I think we just needed a little bit of fortune to bounce our way and sometimes that's just soccer. I couldn't be prouder of the guys and how they played (Sunday)."

The lone score for the game came in the 68th minute when the Orediggers (7-3-0 overall, 2-0-0 RMAC) capitalized on a rare opportunity Sunday; a cross put into the box by Michael Sprauer and headed in by Gabe Rodriguez.

"Getting a goal in a game you know is going to be tight is obviously very important. We weren't able to get that last little bit and that was the only thing missing from our performance (Sunday)," Oberholtzer said. "Mines capitalized on the one good look they had all game."

FLC freshmen Gabriel Legendre and Maximilian Meier each put one shot on goal apiece, as did senior forward Brantley Bice and sophomore midfielder Aymaro Vargas to help lead the Skyhawks' attack.

The Skyhawks were left without one of their starting attackers Georgi Stoyanov after a scary head-to-head collision forced the freshman out of the game in the 58th minute.

Stoyanov was responsive and walked off the field under his own power, but did not return to the game.

"The safety of the players is always the first priority and he's an absolute warrior," Oberholtzer said of Stoyanov. "We're thinking about him and I think the guys did everything they could to continue to fight for him."

Fort Lewis, which picked up a dominating 3-0 victory over previously unbeaten Colorado Christian on Friday in its RMAC opener, will look to bounce back next week when the team heads back on the road for matchups against Colorado Mesa (7 p.m. Friday) and Westminster College (2:30 p.m. Sunday).

The Skyhawks faced the two teams in non-conference action back on Sept 24 and Sept. 26, knocking off the then-ranked No. 16 Mavericks by a 2-1 final, and falling 2-1 to the Griffins.

"We need to have a short memory and just move on from this game. We're disappointed to drop the points, especially in a game where we felt we were the better team," Oberholtzer said. "Next week is another tough weekend, so we need to keep moving forward. Going back to Mesa on Friday; I'm sure they are going to be up for playing us again here in a couple days."
