Skyhawks Take Five Setter from Hardrockers at Home

DURANGO, Colo. --  The Fort Lewis College volleyball team claimed a five-set win over South Dakota Mines on Friday night behind double-doubles from sophomore Chay Swenson and freshmen Alexis Hobie and Natalia Lambos. Fort Lewis improves to 5-10 overall and 5-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while S.D. Mines drops to 9-10, 3-8 RMAC.

Hobie led all players with 20 kills to go along with 14 digs. Swenson followed with 10 kills and 15 digs while Lambos picked up 10 kills and 13 digs. Junior Payton Harmann dished out 32 assists. Senior Avynn La Rose and sophomore Lauren Burns each earned six blocks while junior Kamryn Lopez came away with a match-high 18 digs.

"We came with a lot of serving pressure, and I think we executed really well in that aspect. That kept Mines out of system, forcing them to switch liberos, and that helped us slow their offense down," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "I'm happy with the way that our young players performed tonight, specifically Alexis, who was a steady force for us on the outside. Even though we fell behind, we still managed to finish on top in front of a home crowd."

Set One (25-23)
The Skyhawks jumped out to a 6-3 lead behind back-to-back kills from Hobie. The Hardrockers rallied to tie the score at 7-7, but another push gave FLC an 11-8 lead. It was back and forth from there, with the visitors seeing their first lead at 15-14. Hobie was good for four kills down the stretch to lift FLC's lead to 22-18, but a pair of attacking errors narrowed the lead at 22-20. Mines came back to go up 23-22 but kills from La Rose and Lambos closed out the set in a home win.

Set Two (25-16)
Again, FLC saw an early lead at 10-3 after kills from Hobie and Lambos as well as a pair of aces from Swenson. The Skyhawks maintained the lead for a large portion of the set, benefitting from an 8-1 scoring run to see set point at 24-14. The Hardrockers earned a kill to hold off the set, but a kill from La Rose closed it out by a score of 25-16.

Set Three (21-25)
Early leads continued to be the story as FLC got up 6-2 to start. Mines rallied to tie the score at 8-8 and took an eventual lead at 10-9. Burns and Lambos notched kills to see an FLC lead at 12-11, but a nine-point run gave the visitors a 20-12 advantage. FLC battled, pulling within three at 22-19 off a Hobie kill. Mines buckled down and took set three by a score of 25-21 after an FLC service error.

Set Four (22-25)
The teams were evenly-match to start the fourth with three lead changes and five ties making up the opening points. The Hardrockers found some separation, going up 11-8 after a kill and double block. FLC responed with five-straight to see a 13-11 advantage. Mines enjoyed a run down the stretch to go up 2-17 before an attacking error slowed the momentum. An attacking error on the Skyhawks gave the visitors set point at 24-19, but FLC put together three in a row to get back into the set. Despite the late push, Mines earned a kill to take the set 25-22.

Set Five (15-13)
A kill from Hobie gave the Skyhawks an early 3-2 advantage in the deciding set. Mines rallied with three points to go up 5-3, but a kill from Lambos and setting error on the visitors had the score tied up. FLC benefitted from a three-point run to see an 11-8 lead. The run continued with three Hardrocker errors to give FLC match point. Mines rallied behind FLC miscues to pull within one, but a kill from Lambos closed the door on a 15-13 win.

Final Comments from Coach Tarnauskaite
"I think that team is really hungry to keep winning, especially when we are in front of our home fans. We feel ready to complete the weekend sweep. We are going to regroup and take forward what we can from this match to be better when we step on the court tomorrow."
