FLC Volleyball Wins Third-Straight Five Setter to Earn a Weekend Sweep

DURANGO, Colo. -- Senior Avynn La Rose set a career-high with 17 kills en route to Fort Lewis College's second-straight five set win on Saturday afternoon. The win is FLC's third-straight, all of which have come in five sets, improving their record to 6-10 overall and 6-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Black Hills State drops to 5-15 overall and 2-10 in the league.

Today came down to our leadership and our ability to dig deep. Taking back-to-back five set matches at home shows that we have a relentless mentality when we step on the court," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We know that it is on us to show up every day, and our focus on the little things has made that attainable for us."

FLC had 61 kills for the match compared to 55 for BHSU. The Yellow Jackets were elite on the blocking front, putting up 15 to just four for the Skyhawks. La Rose led the team with 17 kills and was followed by both sophomore Chay Swenson and freshman Alexis Hobie who contributed 13 apiece. Freshman Natalia Lambos followed with 10 kills. Junior Payton Harmann led the way with 32 assists in four sets of work. Defensively, it was junior Kamryn Lopez's 15 digs that led the team.

Set One (25-19)
The Skyhawks enjoyed a four-point run to go up 8-7 in the opening set with a kill from La Rose and a trio of errors paving the way. Swenson and Lambos each chipped in kills as the lead moved to 13-10, but a pair of errors pulled BHSU within one. FLC benefitted from yet another four-point blast, brought on by a pair of La Rose kills, to reach a 20-15 advantage. Swenson chipped in two kills in the final points to close out a 25-19 set.

Set Two (13-25)
A 7-2 opening run for the Yellow Jackets saw the home team trailing before a Lambos kill could slow things down. BHSU continued to put together scoring streaks to see a dominant 15-5 lead. Hobie found space down the line for a kill and followed it up with an ace to fuel a four-point run to bring things to 15-9. Despite the late push, BHSU went on a 6-2 run to close out the match at 25-13.

Set Three (24-26)
FLC came back in set three to see a 7-5 lead off a Lambos ace. The lead grew to 14-9 off a block from sophomore Lauren Burns and Lambos. The Yellow Jackets came back to tie the score at 24-24 and found two more points to take the third set, 26-24.

Set Four (25-20)
BHSU carried the momentum in to the fourth set, looking to end the match in 3-1 fashion. FLC rallied to tie the score at 11-11 after a kill from Hobie. The Yellow Jackets countered to an ace and a kill to go ahead 16-14. The Skyhawks found a 9-2 scoring run, pushing the set to 24-19, which was fueled by four kills off the hand of La Rose. BHSU held off set point with a kill, but La Rose pounded away another kill for a 25-20 win.

Set Five (15-11)
BHSU held a lead in the opening points of the deciding set before the Skyhawks tied it at sixes with a kill from Hobie. Back-to-back attacking errors by the visitors lifted the lead to 10-8, but the Yellow Jackets righted the ship with two kills to tie it up. Facing a familiar situation, playing in their fifth five setter of the season, the Skyhawks remain poised as the match neared it's end. Lambos put away a kill to give FLC a narrow 12-11 lead. From there, a pair of kills from Swenson capped off a 15-11 win.

Final Comments from Coach Tarnauskaite
"I'm really proud of the way that our middle blocking game has improved throughout the season. We are opening up space for our other options to get involved, and that shows when you have four players with double-digit kills. I can see the determination in my player's eyes, and I think we are in a good spot heading into the final few weeks of the regular-season."
