Skyhawks have win streak halted, fall by a 1-0 final in overtime to MSU Denver

DURANGO, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team had its three-game winning streak come to an end on Sunday, falling by a 1-0 overtime final to Metropolitan State University of Denver to conclude the home portion of its schedule.

Fort Lewis (7-7-1 overall, 4-4-0 RMAC) dominated possession and shot attempts (21-13), but were unable to sneak a chance past MSU Denver (7-8-1 overall, 4-4-0 RMAC) goalkeeper, Ross Miller.

The Skyhawks caught a break early in the second half when MSU Denver defenseman Jonas Votaw received a straight red card, leaving the visiting Roadrunners a man down for the final 44 minutes of play.

MSU Denver finally broke through with the game's only goal in the 94th minute, taking advantage of a free kick opportunity from 40 yards out when Alec Nguyen put a ball into the box for Aaron Biggerstaff, who was able to get his right foot on it for the game-winner.

Sophomore midfielder Aymaro Vargas and freshman forward Gabriel Legendre each led the Skyhawks with four total shots, while true freshman forward Tomas Duenes, who entered with goals in each of the last three games, added three total shots on the afternoon.

In net, senior goalkeeper Peter Byrne finished with three saves.

Following the loss, the Skyhawks head into the finale weekend of the regular season in a four-way tie for 5th place in the RMAC standings. Fort Lewis, MSU Denver, UCCS and Colorado Christian are all deadlocked with 12 points apiece vying for one of the six qualifying spots for the RMAC Tournament, scheduled to start with quarterfinal action on November 4.

FLC concludes the regular season with road trips out to Regis University (7-7-1 overall, 3-5 RMAC) on Friday and Sunday up at South Dakota Mines (1-13-1 overall, 0-8 RMAC).
