FLC Volleyball Drops a Three Set Match to (RV) Colorado Mesa University

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball team closed out the weekend road trip with a straight-set loss to (RV) Colorado Mesa University on Saturday. Fort Lewis moves to 6-12 overall and 6-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while Mesa improves to 17-4 on the year and 12-2 in the league.

Colorado Mesa hit at an impressive .400 clip for the match while holding Fort Lewis to a .063 mark. The Mavericks were equally as impressive defensively, tallying 52 digs versus 36 for the Skyhawks. Sophomore Chay Swenson and freshman Alexis Hobie each provided five kills on the day. Kamryn Lopez had a team-high eight digs, followed by six for junior Makena Ahuna. Freshman Natalia Lambos had three service aces to lead all players.

Set One (13-25)
The Mavericks jumped out to an 11-4 lead behind a 5-0 scoring run. A kill from Hobie provided a side out, but Mesa responded with a 5-1 run to take a commanding 16-6 lead. Junior Cameron Callahan and Lambos combined for a block to see the score at 18-8. Another kill by Hobie saved a set point, but an eventual kill for the Mavericks ended things by a score of 25-13.

Set Two (12-25)
The Skyhawks saw the score tied at 4-4, but a four-point Maverick run had the home team ahead. The lead continued to grow with Mesa going up 17-7. The points continued to pour on with a service aces giving Mesa a 21-9 advantage. A kill from sophomore Lauren Burns and an attacking error saw the score at 23-11 before a Maverick kill brought on set point. A kill out of the middle closed out the set in 25-12 fashion.

Set Three (18-25)
Callahan and Swenson picked up kills to begin the third with the teams knotted up at 8-8. Mesa enjoyed a 4-0 run to take the lead and bring on an FLC timeout. The lead pushed to 20-12 for the home squad before a double block on the outside gave FLC the serve. The roll continued with Mesa finding match point. A service ace from Lambos and a kill through the block by Swenson extended the match, but a play out of the middle closed out the match.

"We are still working on figuring things out, and it was encouraging to see the team really motivated and fired up after the match. This group wants to succeed and wants to get better, which is something that I look for in my players. We know that there is tough competition ahead of us. We are excited to be back at home next week, and it should be a special weekend for us with Senior Day wrapping up the home season."

Fort Lewis (6-12) returns home next week for a pair of matches with Colorado Christian University and No. 1 MSU Denver. The CCU match will be Friday at 6:00 p.m. with the MSU Denver match wrapping up the season's home matches on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
