FLC Volleyball Downed by CCU in Four Sets

DURANGO, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College volleyball fell in a narrowly-contested match with Colorado Christian University on Friday night inside of Whalen Gymnasium. The Skyhawks took the second set in inspired fashion but dropped the following two to fall to 6-13 overall and 6-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The difference maker in the match came in defense at the net with the Cougars tallying 12 blocks compared to six for the Skyhawks. Fort Lewis had 48 kills to CCU's 44 and hit .120 for the match. Freshman Alexis Hobie led the team in kills, amassing 13 to go along with nine digs. Junior Kamryn Lopez led all players with 20 digs. Junior Payton Harmann dished out 29 assists with five kills on 12 attacks (.333).

"When I look at tonight's match, I really want to highlight Alexis Hobie. I think she has grown so much in her leadership—even as a freshman. She brings a lot of steadiness to our team and is a strong competitor that we can always rely on to score when we need a point," credited head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "Beyond her offensive performance, she has come alive at the service line which can be a game changer in close sets."

Set One (23-25)
A kill from senior Cameron Callahan had the Skyhawks ahead 7-4, but a sizeable run had the Cougars up 11-8. FLC battled back with four-straight, capped off by a kill from sophomore Chay Swenson to go up 12-11. The back-and-forth trend continued into the late points with CCU finding set point at 24-19. The Skyhawks rallied behind a pair of kills from Callahan and an ace from Hobie to pull within one, but an eventual kill gave the visitors a one set edge.

Set Two (25-20)
The momentum carried over into the second set as FLC soared ahead to a 9-4 lead, punctuated by a block from freshman Natalia Lambos. The Cougars chipped away at the lead and puled within two at 19-17 after a double block on the outside. Senior Avynn La Rose brought the lead back to four with a commanding kill out of the middle, and a pair of points had FLC at set point. CCU found a block to extend the set, but Hobie responded with a kill to close it out at 25-20.

Set Three (19-25)
The visitors responded with an early run to go up 8-2. Lambos dropped in a kill to slow the roll, and FLC put up back-to-back points to bring things to 9-5. The Cougars continued to streak together points, taking a sizable lead at 16-9 before a pair of points from Hobie has FLC in double-digits. The Skyhawks had 7-2 run down the stretch to see the score at 20-18 in favor of the Cougars. CCU bounced back with a 5-1 run to take the third set in 25-19 fashion.

Set Four (20-25)
CCU enjoyed another fast start in the deciding set, going up 8-5 before a side out kill from Harmann cut the advantage. FLC fought back to tie the score at 10-10 behind a Hobie kill. From there, CCU went up 15-12, fueled by three Skyhawk hitting errors. Momentum swung in favor of the home squad with a 4-0 run giving FLC an 18-16 lead. As quickly as the tides changed, they were back in favor of the opposition with a seven-point run having FLC down 23-18. Harmann and La Rose tallied kills down the stretch, but an error gave CCU a 25-20 set win.

Final Comments from Coach Tarnauskaite
"Tomorrow we are playing a huge opponent on Senior Night. It will be an energetic environment, and it will be a fun challenge to welcome to top team in the nation. It's going to seve as a key learning experience for my team. We have to start thinking about how we want to write our story, because it's not over until it's over, and we are still in this."
