Women's Basketball Closes Out Weekend With 65-47 Loss to Eastern New Mexico

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team wrapped up the season-opening weekend with a 65-47 loss to Western New Mexico University on Saturday night. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson picked up her first career double-double with 11 rebounds and 17 points. Fort Lewis falls to 0-2 overall while ENMU improves to 2-0.

"Kelsey is a big part of what we do here. She is a tough player and was really aggressive. Some of the bounces didn't go our way tonight but they will come," said head coach Taylor Harris. "We just need to stay positive and trust the process of a new season with a new team. Kelsey is one of the best leaders with that mindset."

Fort Lewis shot 28.1 percent (16-of-57) from the field compared to 37.5 percent (24-of-64) for WNMU. The difference-maker came from beyond the arc with the Mustangs hitting 11 threes to just four for the Skyhawks. WNMU had 44 rebounds for the game, including 13 offensive boards, versus 30 total rebounds for FLC.

Sorenson and senior Sydney Candelaria each picked up 17 points to lead the team. Senior Alyssa Adams followed with seven points and six rebounds. Sorenson's 11 rebounds paced the team.

The Skyhawks saw an early lead with a layup from Sorenson finding the score at 4-2 with six minutes remaining in the opening quarter. WNMU answered, reclaiming the lead with a run to bring things to 12-6. Adams knocked down a three to narrow the gap at 12-9 with four minutes to go, and the score remained close with a pair of free throws by redshirt freshman Claudia Vidal seeing the Skyhawks down 17-15 after one quarter of play.

Points from the charity stripe kept the Skyhawks in the game as a pair from Adams kept FLC within a point. A scoring drought plagued the middle part of the second quarter, but the Mustangs made up for it with a six-point run extending the lead to 27-20 with 2:44 on the clock. Candelaria slowed the momentum with a three of her own, bringing her point total to seven for the night. WNMU continued the trend from beyond the arc with a pair of threes to end the quarter, seeing FLC down 33-23.

Sorenson opened the third quarter with back-to-back layups, followed by one from Candelaria to move the score to 37-29 with 7:29 to go in the third. The teams traded points in the ensuing minutes, capped off by a three from Candelaria to shift the score to 42-36 with just under three minutes to go. The final scoring play of the quarter came with :31 on the clock with another three by the Mustang bringing it to 51-40 heading into the final quarter.

WNMU kicked off the fourth with a 12-0 run to extend the lead to 23 points before a Candelaria layup slowed the roll. Freshman Samantha Wattawa registered her first points as a Skyhawks with 1:27 to go, hitting a jumper to bring it to 63-45. Redshirt freshman Iva Drobnjak dropped in her first points of the season via free throws, closing out the game with a final score of 65-47.

Fort Lewis (0-2) is back on the road for a midweek, nonconference showdown with Western Colorado University (1-1). Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.

"Western will be another tough road matchup for us, but all of these road games are preparing us for a difficult RMAC schedule," acknowledged Harris. "Going to Gunnison on Wednesday is no different. We get to compete against a tough, well coached team. I expect us to bounce back and stay together."
