Skyhawks Close Out Season in 3-0 Loss to New Mexico Highlands

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The season came to a close for the Fort Lewis College volleyball team on Saturday afternoon with the Skyhawks falling in three sets to New Mexico Highlands University. Fort Lewis ends the season with an overall record of 6-16 and a 6-12 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

"This season challenged us as we battled injuries and had players suiting up in different positions throughout the year," said head coach Giedre Tarnauskaite. "More than anything, I was proud to see the team coming together day after day. There's no question that they battled and showed up every day."

The Skyhawks struggled to find momentum offensively, hitting .050 for the match versus .235 for the Cowgirls. FLC outplayed Highlands in the blocking category, totaling 14 to 10 for the home team. Senior Avynn La Rose led the team with seven kills and four blocks. Freshman Natalia Lambos had 14 assists for the match in addition to 10 digs and three blocks. Freshman Alexis Hobie and junior Kamryn Lopez each added nine digs for the match.

Set One (18-25)
The teams were back-and-forth early with the lead changing sides on three occasions before a 4-0 run had Highlands up 11-8. Hobie put away a kill to have FLC down 12-10, but another mini run had the lead built up again. The Skyhawks answered back with a 5-1 run which included kills from three different attackers and a block by La Rose and Lambos. FLC came close to overtaking the lead twice in the late points, but a five-point run for Highlands ended the set in a 25-18 score.

Set Two (8-25)
The set began in dramatic fashion, with Highlands going up 12-2 before a side out kill from senior Makena Ahuna. The hole continued to get deeper with the Cowgirls taking a commanding 18-5 lead. FLC earned three points off of errors to get to 19-8, but the following six points went to the Cowgirls to close it out at 25-8.

Set Three (20-25)
Highlands saw a 4-2 lead to start, taking a point off a long rally that saw both sides flashing strong defense. The home team continued to build on the lead, going up 7-3 before a side out kill off the block. The Highlands setter got offensive, going for a pair of kills to extend the advantage to 12-7. Swenson sliced a kill down the line to see the score at 14-8, and a block from Lambos and La Rose tacked on another point. Swenson went line again, this time narrowing the gap to 15-12 until a quick kill out of the middle had the separation at four points. The lead remained in the hands of Highlands with an attacking error pushing the score to 22-17. The Cowgirls put away a kill out of the middle to see match point and closed it out via an FLC attacking error.

"We are still young, and I was really impressed with the way that our freshman class developed throughout the year. The development was evident in their performance on the court, but even more so in their confidence. The future is bright, and we are read to put in the work to take it to the next level next season," noted Tarnauskaite.

Fort Lewis ends the year with a 6-16 overall record with five of the wins coming on their home court. The Skyhawks battled adversity all season, seeing several players stepping up to fill important roles throughout the year. The young team will graduate the senior class of Makena Ahuna, Cameron Callahan, Avynn La Rose, and Madi Nash.
