Skyhawks take positive steps, but fall by 37-14 final on the road to rival Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College and Adams State University football teams squared off Saturday down in Alamosa for the 59th time in their history, with the Grizzlies coming away with the 37-14 victory in the latest chapter of the six-decade long rivalry.

Fort Lewis (0-10 overall, 0-9 RMAC) set season highs in passing (276) and total offense (310), while forcing three turnovers on the defensive side of the ball. Unfortunately, the Grizzlies (1-9 overall, 1-7 RMAC) finished with 602 total yards of offense and were efficient in the red zone, scoring on six of their seven opportunities.

Adams State owned a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and a 24-0 advantage at the break as the FLC offense scuffled early.

The Skyhawks broke through in the third quarter when junior wide receiver Dylan Holt reeled in his team-high third touchdown catch of the season; a 27-yard catch and run delivered from junior quarterback Armon Hickson.

Hickson finished 15-of-37 through the air for a career-high 248 yards and the score to Holt. His favorite target on the day was freshman wide out Drake Cortez, who racked up career highs in catches (5) and receiving yards (82).

Redshirt junior running back Jeff Hansen added three catches for 52 yards to go with his team-high 44 rush yards, and fellow redshirt junior running back Emmanuel Nwosu nabbed two catches for 45 yards.

Nwosu would score the Skyhawks' second touchdown of the ballgame at the 9:18 mark of the fourth quarter; a one-yard plunge for Nwosu's second touchdown this fall.

Defensively, redshirt sophomore Jayden Helms continued his stellar season as he led all players with 14 total tackles — eight solo tackles — and added a fumble recovery.

Helms, who entered the weekend ranked No. 2 in the nation in solo tackles, padded his RMAC lead as he now owns 113 total tackles, 68 solo tackles and an 11.3 tackles per game average; all tops among RMAC defenders.

Freshman linebacker Josiah Flores joined Helms as one of three FLC players with double-digit tackles with 13, while redshirt sophomore Max Hyson chipped in 10 tackles.

In the secondary, converted wide receiver turned safety Markez Boykin had a career day. The senior was credited with two forced fumbles and recorded his first career interception to go along with a career-high eight tackles.

Fort Lewis will conclude the 2021 season with a non-conference road trip to face former RMAC foe, Dixie State University (0-9 overall), which is now in its first full season as a member of the WAC.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Greater Zion Stadium in St. George, Utah.
