FLC Women's Soccer Falls to Top-Seeded Mavericks in RMAC Quarterfinal

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team's 2021 campaign came to a close in a 1-0 loss to Colorado Mesa University in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinal. FLC, the eight-seed, face the top-seeded Mavericks for the second time this season, falling in both matches by identical 1-0 scores.

"With having such a limited roster today, the group showed that they don't have any quit," said head coach Damian Clarke. "We are tough and created a couple scary opportunities for ourselves which made it a good game. That was the top team in the league, and we didn't make it easy for them. A lot of players were big today. Our young players are going to grow through a mentality instilled by our older players, and I have high hopes for them going forward."

Fort Lewis closes out the season with an overall record of 5-10-2 and a 3-7-2 record in RMAC play. CMU advances to the RMAC Tournament semifinals with a record of 14-3-0.

The Mavericks held a 25-4 advantage in shots for the match, including an 8-3 margin in shots on goal. Freshman Danielle Gonzales led the Skyhawks with two shots on goal, followed by senior Maddie Allen who placed one shot on frame. Sophomore Katlyn Rosenbaum had seven saves at goalkeeper.

CMU set the tone early, putting up four shots in the opening 15 minutes of play, one of which ricocheted off the crossbar to hold the score at zeros. Rosenbaum earned her first save in the 19th minute, but the home team would only be denied for so long. The go-ahead goal came in the 28th minute when CMU's Haley Klasner settled a ball outside the box and poked one past an outstretched Rosenbaum for the 1-0 lead. Junior Madyson Barela and Gonzales tallied shots down the stretch, but the lead held heading into the break.

In the second half, Gonzales picked up where she left off with a shot on goal in the 46th minute. A save by the opposing keeper preserved the one-goal margin. The Mavericks responded with six unanswered shots before Allen showed offensive prowess with a shot low center which was gobbled up by the keeper. CMU continued to send shots toward the goal, each of which was halted by Rosenbaum. Despite the defense's best effort, offense was held in check to close out the match in favor of the Mavericks.

"When I think about this senior class, the world that comes to mind is selfless. Katie Smith set an example for the last four years that we can't replace. She's moved around the field her entire career, and I couldn't ask for anything more from her. That sentiment goes for the entire group, they showed up every day and battled for each other…they leave big shoes to fill," acknowledged Clarke. "We will be a better team next year after all the challenges and adversity we faced this season. At the end of the day, it's a learning experience that we can choose to get better from."
