Skyhawks Close Out 2021 Portion of Schedule With 87-53 Loss to No. 15 Orediggers

DURANGO, Colo. – Facing its toughest foe of the season, the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team dropped an 87-53 decision to No. 15 Colorado School of Mines to close out the 2021 portion of the schedule on Saturday evening.

Fort Lewis falls to 2-10 on the year and 1-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) while Colorado School of Mines improves to 10-1 overall while remaining undefeated in league play at 5-0.

"I truly think that Mines is a team that will be competing in the Elite Eight this season, and for us to get to compete against a team like that is a great opportunity," said head coach Taylor Harris. "Games like this force us to get better. I thought that we learned a lot and grew a lot in this game. The final score doesn't indicate how well our team played together. That is a big focus for us as we try to take the opponent out of the equation and focus on our game."

The Skyhawks shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the field versus 49.3 percent (34-of-69) for the visiting Orediggers. The true difference-maker in tonight's contest came via the turnover with Fort Lewis committing 28 to just 11 for Mines. In turn, the Orediggers put up 35 points off turnovers compared to 7 for the Skyhawks.

Leading Fort Lewis with her fifth 20+ point outing of the year was redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria at 20 points. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson followed with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Redshirt freshman Jana Conejero put up a well-rounded performance with five points, four assists, two steals, and two rebounds.

Sorenson and Candelaria put up the first eight points for the Skyhawks, seeing the blue and gold ahead 8-6 three minutes into the game. The lead remained in the hands of FLC through the opening five minutes, but an eventual three-pointer for the Orediggers turned the tables to 4:25 to go. Candelaria went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe as the opening quarter wound down, but Mines held a 25-18 advantage after one-quarter of play.

The Orediggers turned it up in the second quarter, going on an 11-3 scoring run over the span of four minutes to see a 38-23 lead. Freshman Piper Terry hit a pull-up jumper to slow the momentum, but Mines responded with seven-straight points to go up 43-23 with 3:27 on the clock. Sorenson and Adams chipped in points on back-to-back possessions to cut into the lead, but the Orediggers responded with a three to take an 18-point lead. The final three minutes of the quarter saw the Orediggers take their largest lead of the night, carrying a 52-28 lead into the break.

The lead grew to 29-points in the first minute of the third quarter, but a three from Sorenson cut into the deficit with 8:11 remaining. Adams echoed the three two minutes later, moving the score to 57-34 in favor of the visitors.  From there, the teams traded points into the final minutes of the quarter with the score sitting at 66-43 heading into the final ten minutes of play.

Redshirt junior Brooke McGee kicked off the fourth quarter with a jumper, followed by a similar shot from Candelaria to cut into the Oredigger lead. Free throws allowed Mines to build the lead back up with the score shifting to 74-49 with 6:11 to go. The Orediggers had their largest lead of the outing minutes later with a jumper finding the visitors up by 32-points. The sizable lead held as time ran out on an 87-53 final score.

Fort Lewis (2-10, 1-5 RMAC) will take a short hiatus for the holiday season, allowing the players to spend time with friends and family before gearing up for the 2022 portion of the schedule. The first four games of the new year will be on the road, kicked off by a January 4th outing at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, S.D. The opening-weekend road trip will wrap up on Jan. 7 at MSU Denver.

"I truly believe that we are a team that's getting better game by game, and the scores really don't show that sometimes. I told the girls that this break is good for us, but we will miss each other and look forward to being together again," acknowledged Harris.
