Skyhawks edged by Yellow Jackets to conclude road trip

SPEARFISH, S.D. — The Fort Lewis College men's basketball team rallied back from a 12-point second half deficit to put itself in position to win Saturday night on the road against Black Hills State University.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, they fell just shy of sweeping the weekend, falling by a narrow 81-81 final to settle for a split in their first RMAC road trip of the season.

"I thought it was a great basketball game. Black Hills State is a very good team and we traded a lot of punches back-and-forth in the second half. They made a few more plays than us in the last four minutes and that was the difference in the game," said FLC head men's basketball coach, Bob Pietrack. "You just have to credit them for the plays they made. And we're proud of our guys for how hard they fought."

After trailing 50-38 to the Yellow Jackets (4-3 overall, 2-0 RMAC) early in the second half, Fort Lewis (5-3 overall, 1-1 RMAC) went on a 17-5 blitz to take its first lead of the second half at 57-55 on a jumper from senior guard JacQuess Hobbs at the 9:54 mark.

Hobbs was sensational most of the evening, scoring a career-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting and adding eight rebounds in his game-high 38 minutes.

The Eastern Kentucky transfer gave FLC its last lead of the game at 72-70 with 4:50 remaining, and pulled the Skyhawks even with Black Hills in the final seconds at 81-81 with 43.7 ticks remaining after cashing in an And-1 opportunity.

Black Hills State answered back on its ensuing possession when PJ Hayes finished off a feed from Tommy Donovan at the rim, giving the Yellow Jackets the lead back at 83-81.

Fort Lewis had a chance to tie or take the lead in the waning seconds, but a skip pass from Hobbs intended for senior Riley Farris at the 3-point arc was knocked away and stolen by BHSU's Adam Moussa to seal the 83-81 final.

"We had multiple options off that high-ball screen, but were just unable to complete the pass," Pietrack said. "But if we could do it again, we'd put the ball right back in JacQuess' hands. He's been incredible for us. Unfortunately, that's just how sports go sometimes."

Hobbs led what was a very strong performance from the FLC back court. Fellow senior guard Will Wittman  recorded his first career double-double with 13 points and season-high 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard Akuel Kot scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting off the bench to pace the Skyhawks' offense.

Redshirt junior forward Brenden Boatwright was the fourth Skyhawk in double-figures with 10 points, while Farris added eight points and senior guard Corey Seng chipped in seven points

Fort Lewis will look to shake off Saturday as the team prepared for a quick turnaround with Western Colorado coming into town Tuesday evening. Tip-off is schedule for 7:30 p.m.

The mid-week game against the Mountaineers is the first of an important four-game home stand for the Skyhawks prior to heading off for Holiday Break.

"The four games will be critical, but all 22 RMAC games are very important. We'll need to make the most of them, for sure," Pietrack said. "The home games are so valuable because the road contests are so difficult. This league is a long road with a lot of twists and turns, so we just need to be ready for the next one."
