Threes Doom the FLC Women's Basketball Team in 66-38 Road Loss

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team faced a red-hot Black Hills State University squad in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Saturday night, falling by a final score of 66-38. Fort Lewis drops to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in RMAC play while BHSU improves to 4-4 on the year and 2-0 in league play.

The difference-maker tonight came from beyond the arc where BHSU shot 53.8 percent (14-of-26) versus just 15.8 percent (3-of-19) for the Skyhawks. The Yellow Jackets also saw success on FLC turnovers, pouring in 34 points to just five for the visiting team. The teams were nearly even when it came to rebounds with BHSU edging out FLC 35-31.

"The threes were a big part of the game tonight. Their threes compared to ours in the second half equated to a 24 point difference which is tough to overcome," said head coach Taylor Harris. "The turnovers were another big part of the game. We got a little rushed and that led to some open threes that were tough for us to overcome."

Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson chipped in a team-high 14 points to go along with nine rebounds. Following Sorenson was redshirt junior Alyssa Adams at nine points and eight rebounds.

The teams were neck and neck early, but back-to-back threes for the Yellow Jackets had the home team ahead 9-2 about three minutes of play. BHSU continued to pad the lead with another couple of threes, bringing their total to five for the quarter, to see the score at 15-4. Adams dipped in a layup to stall the scoring run with 3:05 to go, followed by a field goal from beyond the arc by redshirt freshman Claudia Vidal to narrow the gap at 15-9.

Redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria hit a free throw out of a timeout to see FLC in double-figures with under two minutes on clock. FLC's run wasn't over yet as Sorenson converted on a sprawling layup, followed by a free throw to pull the Skyhawks within two points. FLC found the final possession of the quarter with a chance to go ahead, but a turnover saw the score at 15-13 after one quarter of action.

BHSU continued its tear from deep, draining two threes in the opening minutes of the second, followed by two free throws to extend the lead further. Adams echoed the long balls, hitting a three of her own to narrow the lead yet again with five minutes to go. Both sides found a groove defensively through the middle part of the quarter, sending the group into a media timeout with 3:54 to go.

The score remained at 25-19 in favor of BHSU heading into the final minute of the half. The Yellow Jackets tacked on another three points, but Adams converted on a pair from the charity stripe to keep FLC within striking distance. The score sat at 29-24 heading into the break.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board to begin the second half, putting up their seventh three of the outing for a 32-24 lead. The home team began to pull away again, taking a 37-24 advantage courtesy of FLC turnovers. The Skyhawks added a couple free throws, but threes continued to doom any effort to cut the lead with the 12th of the night extending the lead to 49-27. The Skyhawk defense held BHSU scoreless over the ensuing minutes but struggled to find rhythm, carrying a 53-29 score into the fourth quarter.

The threes slowed down to start the fourth, but the Yellow Jackets found other ways to score, seeing the score at 58-31 with 6:39 to go. FLC tacked on three points in the following two minutes to move the score to 58-34. The home team continued to ride the momentum, running away with a 66-38 win.

Fort Lewis (1-7, 0-2 RMAC) returns home to Whalen Gymnasium for a Tuesday showdown with Western Colorado University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. The teams met in nonconference action on November 17 with the Mountaineers earning a 72-59 win.

"We're excited to finally be home and to play in front of our home crowd in Whalen," said Harris. "We're making progress. The scores do not indicate the strides we are making every game. The fact that we are about to be home for the next two weeks will surely have a positive impact."
