Vasquez scores a career-high 27, but Skyhawks fall by 70-55 to Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team traveled to Alamosa on Tuesday for a make-up game against Adams State University, falling by a 70-55 final inside Plachy Hall to the Grizzlies.

Fort Lewis (4-9 overall, 4-9 RMAC) received big-time performances from sophomore forward Jordan Vasquez and senior guard Katrina Chandler, but it was a season-high 29 turnovers for the Skyhawks that proved to be the difference Tuesday.

"It's going to be hard to put yourself in a position to win a game when you have 30 turnovers," said FLC head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "I don't think (ASU) was pressuring much. A lot of them were kind of just our own mistakes that led to those turnovers. We were forcing things instead of letting the game come to us."

Adams State (3-7 overall, 3-7 RMAC) was able to take advantage, going on an 17-0 extended run between the end of the second quarter and start of the third, scoring 21 of its first 46 points off FLC turnovers.

With the game tied 20-20 with 3:37 remaining in the first half, ASU went on a 9-0 run to take a 29-20 advantage into the break. The Grizzlies then started the third quarter on an 8-0 run to bump their lead to 37-20 at the 8:07 mark of the third quarter.

"We had several turnovers that led to (ASU) hitting shots and going into halftime we had 19 turnovers. That's a lot, especially for a half," Griego said. "It was really hard for us (Tuesday) to get into an offensive groove."

Despite the turnovers, the Skyhawks were able to stay within striking distance behind a career-high 27 points from sophomore forward Jordan Vasquez, who also grabbed 10 rebounds to notch her fourth double-double of the season.

Vasquez scored 19 of her 27 in the second half, doing the bulk of her damage against the size and length of ASU forward Kaitlyn Bell; a 6-foot, 4-inch Division I transfer from Idaho State University.

"Jordan was playing against someone who is 6'4 so for her to be able to perform and score that amount against that size and double-teams was really good to see," Griego said.
Senior point guard Katrina Chandler also had an efficient evening for FLC, scoring a season-high 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

Junior guard Alyssa Adams added five points, while seniors Sydney Candelaria and Bailey Osmer each chipped in four points to round out the FLC scorers.

Fort Lewis will look to bounce-back Friday when it welcomes in the Grizzlies for the second half of the two teams back-to-back. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside of Whalen Gymnasium.

"Adams is scrappy, they play hard and they play physical. We need to be prepared for that and make sure we have that in our minds (Friday)," Griego said. "The other thing for us is limiting our turnovers. Tuesday overall was just not a good game for us, team wise. We had some individuals who played well, but we're at our best when we're playing good team basketball."
