Off night on offense hampers FLC in 74-69 loss to Adams State

DURANGO, Colorado — Tough shooting nights are few and far between for the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team, historically a top-three scoring offense in the RMAC and the conference leaders in scoring entering the weekend.

But a tough night from the field came at an inopportune time Friday evening against an equally high-powered Adams State team as the Skyhawks fell by a 74-69 final to the Grizzlies.

Fort Lewis (5-7 overall, 4-7 RMAC), held below 70 points for just the second time this season, scuffled with a season-low 41.5% shooting night (22-of-53), including an uncharacteristic 35.5% (11-of-31) mark in the second half.

"I just thought Adams played better than us tonight. Tonight was the first time, really all season, where offensively we didn't play very well," said FLC head coach, Bob Pietrack. "Credit to Adams. I thought they played really well, especially in the second half. They are a very good basketball team with some incredible players who played well (Friday)."

The Grizzlies (7-7 overall, 7-7 RMAC), who now sit atop the conference in scoring at 78.5 points per game, shot 48.3% (28-of-58) from the field Friday and had four players finish in double figures.

ASU guard Destan Williams led all scorers with 20 points, but it was fellow guard Kaelin Crane who sparked the Grizzlies down the stretch as he scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half to help ASU build a 16-point lead after FLC held the 32-29 halftime advantage.

"I thought Kaelin Crane in that second half was probably the difference in the game," Pietrack said. "Frederick Jackson and Destan Williams are great players and when (ASU) got a third player going, it made it harder. He's a difficult guy to guard."

FLC senior forward Riley Farris led the Skyhawks with a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Dunnell Stafford contributed 13 points off the bench and redshirt junior forward Brenden Boatwright, nursing an ankle injury, gutted out 10 points and six rebounds.

The fourth Skyhawk in double-figures Friday was junior guard Eric Jamerman as he scored a career-high 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting while playing a season-high 22 minutes.

Jamerman added eight points in last Friday's matchup against No. 1 Colorado School of Mines and has started to carve out a role as a shooting guard spark off the bench.

"I like Eric a lot and really proud of him. I think he's earned his stripes here. We didn't hand him anything early, he had to earn it," Pietrack said. "You see that a lot with transfers as they get going in the middle of their junior year, they figure things out and get comfortable with the system and coaches. Excited about Eric, he still has two years to go and we think he'll be a staple of our program moving forward."

Fort Lewis will look to rebound Saturday with a 6 p.m. matchup against CSU Pueblo. The Skyhawks nearly knocked off the ThunderWolves earlier this month, holding a 10-point halftime lead up in Pueblo, but fell by an 84-77 final back on Feb. 8.

"CSU Pueblo is pretty guard heavy and we are not. We're pretty big, so there is a contrast in styles," Pietrack said. "The first half last game we played pretty well, but ran out of gas a little bit and (CSU Pueblo) hit a bunch of shots in the second half. Our focus is; we have to be able guard. They have a star player in David Simental that we haven't been able to figure out, he's a really good player. For our team, we really need to find a way to get the feeling of winning."
