Candelaria sinks game-winner on Senior Night to lift FLC to a 63-60 victory over CSU Pueblo

DURANGO, Colorado — With 18 seconds remaining, and the FLC women's basketball team trailing Colorado State University Pueblo by one at 60-59, everyone inside Whalen Gymnasium knew where the ball was going.

There was just no one who could stop it.

FLC senior guard Sydney Candelaria, proud owner of two game-winning shots a season ago, took her familiar spot on center stage. The lefty faked right, drove left and under-hand scooped a layup off the glass before help defense could arrive for what proved to be the game-winner Saturday in a 63-60 victory over the visiting ThunderWolves.

"I know when it's coming down to the wire who I'm going to give the ball to," said FLC head women's basketball coach, Orlando Griego. "I'm going to get (Candelaria) going to her left and she's going to make a play. And that's exactly what she did. I'm so proud of Sydney."

Candelaria's heroics came on a night where the Skyhawks (6-9 overall, 6-9 RMAC) honored her and her three fellow graduating seniors in Katrina Chandler, Chloe Warrington and Bailey Osmer.

The win over CSU Pueblo (3-13 overall, 3-13 RMAC) also gave FLC a much-needed weekend sweep to keep its RMAC Tournament hopes alive with three regular season games remaining.

"Having the trust in my coaches and teammates, and being able to have our families here to see it, it was a special day," said Candelaria, noting the FLC senior parents allowed to attend the game Saturday. "I'm glad we got to pull that one out."

All four FLC seniors shined Saturday. Candelaria's game-winner pushed her into double-figures with 11 points. Osmer filled the stat sheet with two points, two rebounds and four assists, while Durango native Katrina Chandler flirted with a triple-double (10 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists) and sharpshooting forward Chloe Warrington poured in 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting.

Warrington scored eight of her 14 points in the second half and grabbed three of her career-high eight rebounds in the fourth quarter to help FLC stave off the ThunderWolves' upset attempt.

The native of Phoenix, Arizona said she knew she was primed for a big night once her first jumper just rolled off the rim.

"My first shot, when I saw it bounce around the rim, I told myself, 'The next one's in,'" Warrington said.

The fourth Skyhawk in double-figures Saturday was forward Jordan Vasquez with 17 points and eight rebounds, putting a bow on a week that saw the sophomore average 24.3 points and 11 rebounds across three games.

As a team, Fort Lewis finished the evening 24-of-52 (46.2%) and shot a season-best 87.5% (7-of-8) from the free-throw line.

The Skyhawks will look to build off their back-to-back wins when they close out their home schedule at 1 p.m. Tuesday with a make-up game against Metropolitan State University of Denver.

"We're excited to get to play one more game inside Whalen and we're going to try to send these seniors off on a high note," Griego said. "And to keep on playing. We're shooting for the playoffs."
