FLC softball falls to #25 Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M to conclude WTA&M Invitational

CANYON, Texas — The Fort Lewis College softball team closed out the West Texas A&M Invitational on Sunday, falling to No. 25 ranked Lubbock Christian University and tournament hosts West Texas A&M.

Fort Lewis (0-4 overall, 0-0 RMAC) began the day with a rematch against the high-powered Lady Chaps (8-2 overall), losing by a 12-0 final in five innings.

The early season woes with the bats continued as FLC was limited to two hits; singles from junior catcher McKenna Hefley and senior outfielder Shelby Hotchkiss.

In Sunday's tournament finale, the Skyhawks' offense broke out for 10 hits against the Lady Buffs (7-0 overall), but had a tough afternoon in the pitcher's circle as West Texas A&M claimed the 11-4 victory.

Senior second baseman Pilar Gutierrez roped a two-run single to left in the bottom of the second inning, scoring Hotchkiss and freshman Cara Daugherty, trimming the Lady Buffs' lead to 5-2.

Sophomore infielder Courtney Huff, who finished with a team-high three hits and went 3-for-4 in the finale, drove in the Skyhawks' third run with a single through the left side that plated McKenna Hefley.

The score held at 6-3 until the fourth inning when West Texas A&M tallied four runs on a grand slam to break the game open at 10-4.

Sophomore outfielder Sloan Shotton worked an RBI walk in the home-half of the seventh inning to score FLC's fourth run, and load the bases with just one out, but the Skyhawks were unable to complete the late rally.

Hotchkiss reached base all four plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with a run scored and two walks, while freshman Brianna Leavell (2-for-3) and junior Kylie Hefley (2-for-4) each produced two hits to help pace the FLC offense.

Fort Lewis will look to bounce back Saturday when it opens RMAC conference play with a four-game series against Colorado Christian University, a team the Skyhawks split with in 2020.

Game times are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday at Aspen Field in Durango.
