FLC bigs shine in 83-64 road win over UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — Back healthy and riding back-to-back wins, the Fort Lewis College men's basketball team leaned on its big men in an 83-64 road thumping of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Saturday.

The tall trio of 6'9 forwards, senior Riley Farris, redshirt junior Brenden Boatwright and junior Brendan La Rose gave the Mountain Lions (5-6 overall, 5-6 RMAC) fits on both ends of the floor.

Farris went off for a game-high 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists, while Boatwright tallied 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting and La Rose swatted two of the Skyhawks (5-4 overall, 4-4 RMAC) six blocked shots on the evening.

"We had the size advantage and we really made an emphasis to take advantage of that with Boatwright, Farris and La Rose," said FLC head coach Bob Pietrack. "We have our full team healthy right now for the first time since Christmas break and we were excited just to play. It was a great team win."

Fort Lewis was sizzling on the offensive side of the floor, shooting a season-high 58.2% (32-of-55) from the field with 40 points in the paint.

Joining Farris and Boatwright in double-figures for the Skyhawks were senior guard Will Wittman, sidelined in Wednesday's game against Adams State with an ankle injury, with 11 points in his return, sophomore guard Akuel Kot with 12 points and junior Tyler Kinghorn, who poured in 10 points in his seven minutes.

While the offense was cooking, the FLC defense was nails as it limited UCCS to a pedestrian 36.2% (21-of-28) shooting performance, including just 5-of-20 (25%) from the 3-point line. The 64 points for UCCS were the fewest allowed by FLC since its 97-59 victory over Park University Gilbert on Nov. 30, 2019.

The Skyhawks earned a 43-30 lead at the half and built their advantage to as large as 25 at 77-52 with 4:55 remaining en route to their third consecutive victory.

The 19-point win also snapped a streak of six straight games for Fort Lewis decided by six points or less.

"I thought this was probably our best game, defensively, since early in the season against Western Colorado," Pietrack said. "Boatwright, Farris and La Rose were able to guard some of the smaller players for UCCS and we thought that was the difference in the game. It's something that we have been working extremely hard on the last six weeks, trying to get our big guys able to guard versatile players."

Fort Lewis will look to keep the win streak going Monday in a make-up game on the road against Colorado State University Pueblo.

The matinee tips off at 1 p.m. inside Massari Arena.

"CSU Pueblo has extraordinary guard play and they are much better than their record. They've dealt with some stuff like we have where they haven't had certain players on certain nights" Pietrack said. "We expect them to be at full strength and we need to muster up 40 good minutes to finish this road trip."
