Missed free throws loom large in Skyhawks' 85-83 double-overtime loss to UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — Just like wins, not all losses are created equal.

Unfortunately for the Fort Lewis College women's basketball team, Saturday's 85-83 road loss in double overtime to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs is one of those games that carried a little extra sting after how close FLC was to departing Gallogly Events Center with a victory.

The Skyhawks (4-7 overall, 4-7 RMAC) shot a respectable 37.8% (28-of-74), 33.3% (10-of-30) from the 3-point line and muscled their way to the free-throw line 37 times Saturday. But a tough night at the stripe (17-of-36, 47.2%) spoiled FLC's chances at claiming its fourth road win of the 2020-21 season.

"I thought we made the game harder on us than it needed to be. At the end of the day, we left 19 points at the free-throw line and if you want to win games out on the road, especially in the RMAC, you have to capitalize on shooting free throws," said Fort Lewis College head coach, Orlando Griego. "I thought we did a nice job of scoring the ball (from the field) when we needed to and getting to the foul line. We just let one slip."

Fort Lewis was able to force overtime after trailing by as many as seven points to UCCS (3-8 overall, 3-8 RMAC) at 60-53 with 4:59 remaining. FLC pulled even on a jumper in the lane from senior point guard Katrina Chandler, who scored 14 points and added five rebounds in a career-high 45 minutes.

In the first overtime, the Skyhawks would lead by as many as five and had a 74-71 advantage with 14 seconds remaining following a free throw from senior Chloe Warrington, but Kaity Hovasse promptly buried a 3-pointer with three seconds left the ensuing UCCS possession to force a second overtime.

With new life, the Mountain Lions took the early lead and never trailed in the second overtime, but had one final gasp from FLC to survive in the waning seconds. With 1.9 remaining, and UCCS nursing an 85-83 lead, the Skyhawks designed a side out-of-bounds play to get Bailey Osmer open on a flair screen, but the pass landed just out of Osmer's reach for a FLC turnover.

"We knew that UCCS was going full denial and was going to switch. We ran Chloe to corner and I thought we had a really good look. Bailey tried to go get the pass, but unfortunately it just didn't go our way."

Sophomore forward Jordan Vasquez led all FLC scorers with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting and added a team-high eight rebounds.

Junior guard Alyssa Adams scored 14 points in her 18 minutes, while Warrington continued her current hot streak with 13 points off the bench. Warrington has now scored in double-figures in three straight games, raising her scoring average to 8.4 points per game on the season.

The Skyhawks will look to shake off Saturday's loss when it welcomes in Colorado School of Mines next Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside Whalen Gymnasium.

"I hope our team can learn from it and light a fire under us that we understand we have to come out and compete and play every possession," Griego said. "That's the biggest thing. I hope we can go back refocus, work harder and learn from this."
