Skyhawks conclude 2021 spring regular season with home losses to Chadron State and CCU

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team closed out the 2021 regular season schedule on Saturday, hosting a pod against Chadron State College and Colorado Christian University inside Whalen Gymnasium.

Fort Lewis (4-9 overall, 4-9 RMAC) entered the day in prime position to make a run at an RMAC Tournament spot, but a young and growing Skyhawks' squad struggled to gain traction much of the afternoon as it fell in three sets to the visiting Eagles (4-9 overall, 3-8 RMAC) and Cougars (5-8 overall, 5-6 RMAC).

"This was definitely not the outcome we expected our thought we'd have this weekend, especially after two very strong weeks of practice. We were very prepared, but we just couldn't put things together," said FLC head volleyball coach, Giedre Tarnauskaite. "We were searching for answers and couldn't find one thing to click for us."

Match One vs. Chadron State (22-25, 23-25, 17-25)

Fort Lewis opened the pod against Chadron State, playing toe-to-toe with the Eagles late into each of the first two sets, but couldn't overcome a tough hitting performance — 27 attack errors and a 0.18 hitting percentage — as CSC finished with a 41-29 advantage in kills.

Part of the offensive struggled for the Skyhawks was due to serve receive. Chadron State only finished with three aces, but was able to force FLC away from its strength of feeding middle blockers Rylee Johnson, Kendall Deeter and Avynn La Rose.

"I thought Chadron State put us on our heels a little bit with serve receive and we couldn't run our middles," Tarnauskaite said. "That devastated us and it was the little things that hurt us."

Senior outside hitter Alexa Treguboff led all Skyhawks with nine kills, while Johnson added five kills on 16 swings and junior outside hitter Madi Nash chipped in four kills.

Sophomore setter Payton Harmann, continuing her way back from a lower body injury that cost her most of 2021, had a team-high 17 assists and seven digs. Fellow sophomore Kamryn Lopez paced the FLC back row with a team-high 12 digs.

Match Two vs. Colorado Christian (14-25, 17-25, 22-25)

Offensive woes plagued the Skyhawks again in their regular season finale against CCU, finishing the match with 24 attack errors and a .049 hitting percentage.

"In general, we struggled offensively the whole day. We had some good individual performances, but we just couldn't quite get all the pieces together," Tarnauskaite said. "We tried different lineups for that purpose and we switched from a 5-1 to a 6-2 offense to get an extra hitter. It gave us a little different look and a better block, but we needed more, offensively."

One of the bright spots for the Skyhawks was the play of true freshman Nya Sciacca as she produced a career-high four kills on just seven swings (.429) while adding an ace and seven digs in her added playing time.

"I have nothing but positive things to say about Nya's performance today. Halfway through the season, she really turned the corner and it was just hard to find her the game time," Tarnauskaite said. "These last few matches gave her an idea of what it is like to compete at this level and to see her play that well, as a freshman, after the hard work she has put in was great to see."

Deeter led all FLC players with six kills against CCU, while Johnson and Nash each tallied five kills apiece to pace the offense.

Junior setter Makena Ahuna dished out 12 assists and popped up a team-high 10 digs in the finale against the Cougars.

Senior outside hitter Alexa Treguboff finished with three kills, giving her a team-best 130 kills on the season and 282 kills during her two-year career at FLC. The transfer from Glendale Community College also finishes her career with 383 digs while being a high-character leader on and off the floor for FLC.

She will graduate from Fort Lewis with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology.

"One of the things we're truly going to miss about Alexa is her heart and character. I think she was a great reflection of our culture," Tarnauskaite said. "She's very composed, very steady and was well liked by her teammates. She's been a big part of our team and even though I only got to have her for a year, I'm a big fan of hers for who she is as a person. We know she's going to be successful in the future and wherever her career takes her."

The Skyhawks currently sit 11th in the RMAC standings — based off win percentage — with two weekends of play left for a handful of teams around the conference. Fort Lewis sits on the outside looking in to the 8-team field for the RMAC Tournament. Adjusted power rankings for the RMAC are not available as of Saturday, leaving the door cracked that FLC could slide up into a playoff spot.

While the team is hopeful it will have the opportunity to play April 8 when the RMAC Tournament gets underway, Tarnauskaite said the team, which featured eight newcomers in 2021, is already excited to get back to work and build off the positives from this spring.

"This whole year for us has been about, 'No Excuses.' We were coming into a Covid-19 year where we didn't know if we'd have a season at all. But we were grateful for the opportunity that we had to play this spring," Tarnauskaite said. "Right now, I just want to go back in the gym and put more work into it. I'm hopeful that our team is hungry and I know they want to compete. I think this spring season gave us an opportunity to see what's out there. Our roster is looking strong and we're going to have some great additions this offseason. I'm looking forward to next year and seeing how it will all come together."
