FLC women's soccer nabs second win of 2021 with 3-0 shutout of Western Colorado

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team didn't play its best game. But the red-hot Skyhawks still did plenty Sunday, rolling to a 3-0 home victory against Western Colorado University to open up RMAC play.

With the victory, the Skyhawks (2-0-2 overall, 1-0-0 RMAC) have now posted in results in all four games to begin the 2021 abbreviated spring season, while the loss dropped the Mountaineers to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the RMAC.

"Honestly, we're a little disappointed with how we played, but we're happy with the result," said FLC head women's soccer coach, Damian Clarke. "We scored good goals in good ways, but I think we all felt there was a lot more in us and we can be a lot more connected front to back with our passing."

Despite some misfires in the team's transitioning, the Skyhawks wasted little time taking control of the match as senior forward Corinne Sanderson maneuvered her way around the WCU goalkeeper and netted her second goal of the season just 13:46 into the contest, set up on a pass from fellow senior Diana Sifuentes.

"Corinne is playing super confident and she wants to beat defenders 1-v-1. Technically, she has probably been the most consistent, sound piece for us on the field so far this year," Clarke said. "The way she scored that goal, dribbling around the goalkeeper, takes a lot of confidence in yourself and I thought she scored a great goal today. Great run and great pass from Diana."

The Skyhawks would take on less than four minutes later on a set piece when junior midfielder Katie Smith tallied her first goal of the spring, finishing off a pass from freshman Elizabeth David at the 17:23 mark.

Fort Lewis would enjoy that 2-0 lead at the half, then capped the game's scoring in the 53rd minute when sophomore Ashley Strader also scored her first goal of 2021, unassisted.

"They both scored goals in really good ways, fighting for the ball inside the box and picking up second balls and putting them in the back of the net," said Clarke of Smith and Strader. "For Katie, she was able to find her way on the receiving end of a set piece and those are things these kids practice. It was good to get them going and I was happy to seem them both get on the board."

As a team, Fort Lewis finished the afternoon with a 19-8 shots advantage, 12-4 in shots on goal, giving the team 39 combined shots over their last two games.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Dunbabin earned her first shutout of the season, stopping all four shot attempts she faced.

Fort Lewis will look to keep the point streak rolling when it welcomes in No. 13 Colorado School of Mines (4-0-2 overall, 2-0-1 RMAC) on Thursday. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Dirks Field in Durango.

"Thursday's game will be a very good test for us," Clarke said of the matchup with the nationally ranked Orediggers. "Our goal today was to get better. I don't think we took as big of a step as I wanted, but without a doubt it's going to take a complete performance from us to compete against Mines the way we want to."
