FLC softball drops Monday doubleheader matinee against Colorado School of Mines

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College softball team wrapped up its four-game series against Colorado School of Mines on Monday, falling by final scores of 5-1 and 8-6 against a red hot Orediggers team.

Fort Lewis (4-12 overall, 4-8 RMAC) struggled to put all three facets of the game together at one time Friday, pitching and playing defense well in Game One's 5-1 loss. The FLC offense came to life in Game Two, scoring six runs on eight hits, but were hampered by four errors in the series finale.

Colorado School of Mines (14-10 overall, 13-7 RMAC), now winners of 10 of their last 12 games, leaves Durango sitting fourth in the RMAC standings, while the Skyhawks remain in the playoff hunt tied for 8th place with CSU Pueblo.

Game One

Monday's doubleheader was a pitcher's duel through the first three innings and FLC redshirt junior Mandy Lorenson limited the Orediggers to one hit while striking out two entering the middle innings.

CSM starter Sydney Marchando, who entered the day second in the RMAC in strikeouts with 40, was just as effective as she went six scoreless, holding the Skyhawks to hits and no walks.

The Orediggers broke through for two runs in the four and three runs in the fifth inning, though, to take a 5-0 lead into the seventh.

Fort Lewis was able to capitalize on one of four errors for the Orediggers in the ballgame in the home-half of the seven as senior Shelby Hotchkiss came around to score on a two-out, opposite field single by junior catcher Taylor Beaman.

Beaman finished 2-for-3 to lead the FLC offense, while sophomore Sloan Shotton and senior Hannah Gondini each recorded singles.

Pitching in relief, senior right-hander Kendra Keahbone tossed two scoreless frames while striking out a pair.

Game Two

Monday's finale got off to a tremendous start for the Skyhawks as they worked five first-inning walks, including three straight RBI walks from Shotton, senior Pilar Gutierrez and sophomore shortstop Courtney Huff, to take a 3-0 lead.

Fort Lewis added a fourth run in the bottom of the second when freshman Cara Daugherty lined her first career hit off the left-field fence for a double. She'd come around to score two batters later on a delayed steal of home after the CSM catcher threw down to second on a bluff attempt by McKenna Hefley.

Unfortunately, the Orediggers wouldn't go away quietly as they struck for runs in the third and fourth inning — both unearned — to get back in the ballgame.

The Skyhawks added runs in the fourth and sixth innings, with Kylie Hefley scoring on a wild pitch in the fourth and Beaman lifting a sacrifice fly in the sixth. But the Orediggers answered with three-run fifth and sixth innings of their own to take an 8-6 advantage.

Fort Lewis threatened to tie or take the lead in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs following an infield single from Shotton, but were unable to get the big two-out hit.

Kylie Hefley was a bright spot atop the Skyhawks' batting order as she reached base three times, finishing 1-for-2 with three runs scored and two walks.

Shotton went 2-for-3 with a run batted in and a walk, while Gutierrez (1-for-3), Huff (1-for-2), Hotchkiss (1-for-3), Daugherty (1-for-4) and freshman Brianna Leavell (1-for-2) all recorded hits to help pace the FLC lineup.

The Skyhawks will look to bounce back later this week when they open a four-game road series against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (11-11 overall, 10-8 RMAC) on Friday. Action gets underway at 12 p.m. Friday out at Mountain Lion Field.
