Skyhawks put #14 Orediggers on the ropes, but late 2OT goal proves to be the difference

DURANGO, Colorado — Thursday's matchup against the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team and No. 14 ranked Colorado School of Mines was a heavyweight battle between two unbeatens and RMAC powers.

Each team played well enough to win. And each team create scoring chances late to give themselves a chance to win. But unfortunately for the Skyhawks, it would be the visiting Orediggers who capitalized on one of the few chances they had Thursday, netting the game-winner with 2:34 remaining in the second overtime.

"I was really proud of the guys' effort. I thought we came out from the first whistle and has Mines on their back foot for large portions of the game," said FLC head men's soccer coach David Oberholtzer. "It was unfortunate to lose the way we did. I'm proud of what the guys did today and we were a little unfortunate. But we need to finish our chances and put teams away."

Fort Lewis (2-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 RMAC) limited the nationally ranked Orediggers to just three shots on goal in a shade over 107 minutes before Azad Iliozer was able to sneak a shot top-right corner at the 107:24 mark.

The Skyhawks owned a 14-12 shot advantage after the first overtime before CSM was able to flip the field the final 10 minutes, finishing with a 5-1 shot advantage in the second overtime.

"Playing 110 minutes, the guys get tired and it ends up being a track meet," Oberholtzer said. "I thought we defended well all game and I didn't think we gave up very few good opportunities, other than the goal."

Fort Lewis nearly sent everyone home early in the first overtime when sophomore defenseman Milen Manchev created separation on a corner kick and got solid contact on a header that look destined for the back of the net.

Unfortunately, Manchev's header just sailed north of the crossbar in the 95th minute.

As a team, Fort Lewis finished with a 6-3 shots on goal advantage and a 6-5 lead in corner kickers.

"We created the chances and from a numbers stand point, we did what we needed to do," Oberholtzer said, referencing the advantage in shots on goal. "We created good looks and I thought we had the better looks. It's such small margins between things. That's the way the game goes sometimes."

Junior defenseman Andres Hernandez redshirt junior forward Loic Jean-Baptiste led all FLC players with three shots apiece, while junior Denis Celik and sophomore Matt Baldridge each recorded two shots.

Fort Lewis will look to bounce back Saturday when it heads to Lakewood for a second matchup against Colorado Christian University, set for 1:30 p.m.

The Skyhawks, who get another crack at Colorado School of Mines in Golden on April 9, are focused on a Cougars team they defeated, 2-1, back on March 21 to earn their first RMAC win of the spring.

"We're not looking beyond Colorado Christian by any means. It was a tight game the first time against them and they've been playing hard all year," Oberholtzer said. "We need to make sure we show up and perform. From a mentality standpoint, this loss is a tough one at the moment. But we need to rebound, and this is a good opportunity to turn around quickly and go get a win."
