Arribas overtime goal pushes FLC men's soccer past CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colorado — A pair of Skyhawks scored their first goals of the season Saturday, helping the FLC men's soccer team to a 2-1 road win over Colorado Christian University in overtime.

Fort Lewis (3-1-1 overall, 2-1-1 RMAC) rebounded for a tough, last-minute double overtime loss to No. 14 Colorado School of Mines on Thursday with its second victory against the Cougars (5-5-0 overall, 1-4-0 RMAC) this spring. FLC also won the previous meeting against CCU by a 2-1 final back on March 21.

After the two teams played a scoreless first half, sophomore forward Matt Baldridge opened the scoring with a goal in the 67th minute, finishing off an assist from junior transfer Andres Hernandez with a bullet 25 yards out.

Colorado Christian would force overtime with a goal in the 84th minute by Silas Hess, but the Skyhawks were rewarded for their relentless pressure in the extra period.

FLC finished with a 17-9 shots advantage, 8-5 in shots on goal, and fired all three shots of overtime until senior midfielder Alejandro Arribas, who settled a loose ball in the box and netted his second career goal as a Skyhawk and first of 2021.

Arribas' goal came at the 97:46 mark of overtime and lifted FLC back into fifth place in the RMAC standings with two more conference games remaining on the abbreviated 2021 spring schedule.

In net, redshirt junior goalkeeper Peter Byrne stopped four of the five shots he faced, upping his save percentage to .789 on the season.

Fort Lewis will look to build off Saturday's momentum when it heads to Golden next Friday for a rematch against the nationally ranked Orediggers (4-0-1 overall, 4-0-1 RMAC). Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. under the lights at Stermole Soccer Stadium.
