Skyhawks conclude RMAC regular season play with 1-1 draw against CCU on Senior Day

DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College women's soccer team played well enough to earn three points, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw Sunday in its RMAC regular season finale against Colorado Christian University.

Fort Lewis (4-1-3 overall, 3-1-1 RMAC) finished with a dominating 24-9 shots advantage against the visiting Cougars (2-5-1 overall, 0-3-1 RMAC), putting 13 of those 24 shots on goal.

"I thought we had a very good performance and it was a very gritty performance by Colorado Christian," said FLC head women's soccer coach, Damian Clarke. "At the end of the day, you have to finish opportunities and we need to get a little better dealing with the fact, we're good enough to keep teams pinned in, but that makes it a little more difficult to score a goal when there are numbers in the box like that."

The Skyhawks cashed in one of those opportunities in the 78th minute when freshman Aubrey Swindle pounced on a ball handling mistake by the Cougars' goalkeeper, finding the back of the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Swindle was a handful up top for the CCU defense as she took seven shots, four shots on goal, on the afternoon.

"I thought that goal was all about an attitude and effort to get forward by Aubrey," Clarke said. "I thought we created a lot of those opportunities during the game and just didn't have some of the fortune it takes to win."

The Skyhawks were close to hanging on for the 1-0 final, but a late penalty giving the Cougars a free kick from just inside the midfield line opened the door for a goal by CCU's Abby Swanda.

With strong, gusting winds at her back, Swanda put a knuckleball on goal that just went over the outstretched hands of FLC goalkeeper Katherine Dunbabin at the 85:57 mark.

"It's such a long shot and difficult ball to read when it is moving like that. You can't fault Katie on that one," Clarke said. "It's a little disappointing when we give up fouls in those areas where we know danger is possible. We just need to be a little smarter about where we foul when we know something like that can happen. It's a bit of maturity for us that needs to keep happening."

Aside from the wind-aided goal against, Dunbabin continued her strong play in net as she stopped the other four shots she faced on Sunday.
Junior midfielder Katie Smith posted a career-high eight shot attempts, while freshman McKenna Ford had three shots off the bench to help lead the FLC attack.

The Skyhawks, who will find out this week if they will be a host for a RMAC Tournament quarterfinal, conclude the 2021 spring regular season on Friday with a non-conference game against Colorado Mesa University.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Dirks Field in Durango.

"I think this game sets us up to keep developing players and that's the goal of this entire season," Clarke said. "We want to keep getting better, get ready for the RMAC Tournament, and get ready for an awesome Fall 2021 season that will be here before we know it."

Notes:
Sunday was also an opportunity for the FLC women's soccer program to honor three graduating seniors in midfielder Ally Holloway, goalkeeper turned defenseman Britt Blomso and forward Corinne Sanderson.

"These are kids who, without a doubt, reflect and helped build the culture of the program," Clarke said. "Anytime you can show up and do anything consistently for four years, you're in the fabric of what that culture is. They are a big part of us."
