Clark scores career-high four goals, but UCCS uses second-half comeback to nab 18-15 final

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — For the second time in as many meetings this spring, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team had the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on the ropes.

Unfortunately, for the second time in as many meetings, the Mountain Lions were able to survive the scare from the Skyhawks as FLC fell by an 18-15 final on Friday during a windy and frigid afternoon at Mountain Lion Park. UCCS edged FLC by a 13-12 final when the teams first matched up back on March 21 for a non-conference game in Durango.

Fort Lewis (2-4 overall, 1-3 RMAC) stormed out to a 5-1 lead through the game's first 12:26, scoring five straight goals is a six-minute span. Senior attacker Ann Nelson netted the first two goals of the game for the Skyhawks — she finished with three goals on the afternoon — while fellow senior Abby Escandon, freshman Ellie Martinez and sophomore Autumn Rymerson all scored goals in succession.

Junior midfielder Maren Clark would score the next three goals for the Skyhawks before the end of the first half to send FLC into the break with an 8-7 lead over the Mountain Lions (6-1 overall, 2-1 RMAC).

Fort Lewis kept that momentum rolling to open the second half, scoring four of the first five goals to bump its lead to 12-8 with 21:15 remaining.

Sophomore attacker Liv Crawford and freshman midfielder Caprietta Abbadessa got the second-half scoring underway for FLC, while Escandon added her second goal of the game and Clark netted her career-high fourth goal of the game to help the Skyhawks build their lead.

Unfortunately, the Mountain Lions responded with a run of their own as they scored eight of the next nine goals — including a 7-0 run between the 17:42 and 9:20 marks — to retake the lead at 16-13.

UCCS finished 17-for-17 on clear attempts and out-shot the Skyhawks 37-26 on Friday, while benefiting from a 32-20 shots on goal advantage.

The Skyhawks were able to get back within two on a pair of occasions, courtesy of goals from freshman Rebecca Kiyokawa with 6:12 remaining and the second goal of the game for freshman Haley Dostie at the 3:47 mark, but were unable to inch closer over the final minutes as UCCS held on for the 18-15 final.

In net, sophomore goalkeeper Averi Basso stopped 14 shots to up her save totals to 62 on the season; the second most amongst RMAC goalies.

Fort Lewis will conclude the weekend's action with another tough test Sunday when it squares off against No. 12 ranked Regis University (6-1 overall, 2-0 RMAC).

Due to snow fall in Denver, the decision was made to move Sunday's game has to the UCCS campus. Action between the Skyhawks and Rangers will get underway at 3:30 p.m. at Mountain Lion Field.
