FLC softball drops Sunday road doubleheader to third-place Metro State

DENVER, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College softball team concluded its four-game road series against Metropolitan State University of Denver on Sunday, falling by the final scores of 5-1 and 5-0 out at Regency Athletic Complex.

Fort Lewis (12-20 overall, 12-16 RMAC) struggled to get the bats going, scoring three runs in the series, against a stingy Roadrunners (22-8 overall, 20-6 RMAC) pitching staff that ranks second in the conference with a 3.04 team earned run average.

Game One

MSU Denver took an early 3-0 lead in Sunday's opener, tallying a run in the first inning and adding two runs in the second.

Fort Lewis answered with a run in the top of the third inning when freshman pitcher Brianna Leavell smoked a double to left that scored junior outfielder Kylie Hefley all the way from first base after she had earned a one-out walk.

The RBI was the 23rd of the spring for Leavell, second on the team behind junior McKenna Hefley's 28 driven in.

Unfortunately, the Skyhawks' offense was unable to push across another run the rest of the way, while the Roadrunners added two insurance runs in the home-half of the fifth on back-to-back home runs by Megan Sansburn and Shelby Robb.

In the pitcher's circle, Leavell went 5.1 innings, allowing 5 runs, just three earned, on 11 hits and striking out one. She currently leads the RMAC with 94 innings pitched and is second in the RMAC in strikeouts with 80 on the spring.

Senior left-hander Kassidy Trumbo got the last two outs of the sixth inning, giving her back-to-back scoreless appearances out of the bullpen.

Freshman Jadyn Gilley, sophomore Sloan Shotton and senior Shelby Hotchkiss all added singles, while junior catcher Taylor Beaman reached base twice via walks to help lead the FLC offense.

Game Two

The FLC offense was able to create traffic in Game Two, loading the bases in the fifth and sixth innings and putting 10 runners on for the ballgame, but were unable to produce the key hit in a 5-0 loss to the Roadrunners.

Metro State did the bulk of its damage early, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead. Robb would add a two-run single in the home-half of the fifth to make it a 5-0 lead for the Roadrunners.

Prior to Robb's single, the Skyhawks were threatening to get back in the ballgame as sophomore short stop Courtney Huff led off the fifth with a single. Back-to-back walks with two outs to Leavell and McKenna Hefley loaded the bases, but a pop out would end the inning and the Skyhawks' threat.

Fort Lewis would load the bases again in the sixth on one-out singles by Hotchkiss and Beaman, and a two-out walk to senior Pilar Gutierrez, but had a strikeout end the inning.

Senior right-hander Kendra Keahbone kept the Skyhawks' within striking distance as she went six inning, allowed five runs on nine hits and didn't walk a batter while inducing 10 groundouts.

As a team, the Skyhawks committed just one error during the four-game series, upping FLC's team fielding percentage to .951 on the season; the seventh best mark in the RMAC.

Fort Lewis, winners of five straight games prior to the MSU Denver series, will look to bounce back next Saturday and Sunday when it hosts its final home series of the 2021 season against Black Hills State University.

Game times are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, while Senior Day will be held on Sunday (11 a.m. and 1 p.m.) at Aspen Field in Durango.
