Scoring drought halts FLC upset bid in road loss to No. 24 Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado — For the second time in as many meetings this spring, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team came out swinging against No. 24 ranked Colorado Mesa University.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, they were unable to keep that pace as the nationally ranked Mavericks used an 11-0 run between the end of the first half, and the start of the second, to earn an 18-9 victory at Maverick Field.

"That run really hurt us and we just couldn't find the back of the cage," said FLC head women's lacrosse coach, Ashley Travis. "We were winning a lot of draws, but couldn't get it done on attack today. That was our main issue."

Fort Lewis (3-6 overall, 2-5 RMAC) finished with a 16-13 advantage in draw controls Sunday, and were playing toe-to-toe with the Mavericks (6-3 overall, 5-0 RMAC) through the game's first 12 minutes and change, pulling even at 5-5 on the 20th goal of the season for senior Ann Nelson.

That's when the game would flip as CMU scored 13 of the next 14 goals, including the 11 straight between the 10:01 mark of the first half and 15:32 mark of the second to take an 18-6 lead.

Nelson and freshman Ellie Martinez led the Skyhawks with two goals apiece, while senior Abby Escandon, and freshmen trio of Rebecca Kiyokawa, Caprietta Abbadessa and Haley Dostie each added a goal apiece to pace the FLC offense.

Fort Lewis finished with 21 total shots for the game, but just seven in the second half as it struggled with 19 total turnovers and an 8-for-14 mark in clear attempts.

"I think it was a little bit of both us not being able to create some open shots or not taking enough shots when we had opportunities," Travis said. "We were also making some kind of silly turnovers on the attacking side."

Junior midfielder Maren Clark led all FLC players with six draw controls while Nelson added five, while defensively Dostie produced a team-high three ground balls.

In net, sophomore goaltender Averi Basso finished with eight saves. Her 85 saves on the season, and 10.63 saves per game average, are the second best marks in the RMAC heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

The Skyhawks will look to rebound from Sunday when they host a pair or crucial games to close out the 2021 regular season, starting at 12 p.m. Friday in Durango with a rematch against Colorado State University Pueblo. FLC then concludes the weekend with a 1 p.m. game Saturday at home against Adams State University.

Friday's bout against CSU Pueblo is an important one for both teams as they chase Westminster College for the fourth and final playoff spot in the RMAC Tournament. Skyhawks enter the weekend in fifth with a 2-5 conference record while Westminster College — a team FLC beat by a 13-12 final on Friday — is 4-4 inside RMAC play with one game left against Colorado Mesa.

"We know what we need to do. We know CSU Pueblo is going to be hungry for a win too, especially after we beat them already," Travis said, referencing the Skyhawks' 13-11 non-conference win to open the season. "It was a close game and we both know we're making our playoff push right now. It's going to be a competitive game and I think the team that gives the most hustle and effort is going to win. I think our girls are ready."
