Skyhawks inch closer to RMAC Tournament with 17-13 victory over CSU Pueblo

DURANGO, Colorado — Hunting the fourth and final playoff spot in the RMAC Tournament, the Fort Lewis College women's lacrosse team produced a 17-13 statement win on Friday, knocking off another playoff hopeful foe in Colorado State University Pueblo out at Ray Dennison Memorial Field.

The Skyhawks (4-6 overall, 3-5 RMAC) were dialed in from the opening draw, firing 26 of their season-high 42 shots in the first half — 18 of which landed on goal and nine in the back of the net — en route to building a 9-6 lead at the half.

"I think we came into the game knowing what we had to do to win. It was the little things we practiced all week that got us the win. It was super exciting to see things come together," said FLC head women's lacrosse coach, Ashley Travis. "Shooting more was something we've talked about the last couple of games. Usually the team that shoots more should win and we really worked on placing our shots this week."

CSU Pueblo (4-9 overall, 3-5 RMAC) weathered the storm early, holding a 6-5 lead with 10:31 remaining in the first half, but the Skyhawks closed with four straight goals — two courtesy of senior attacker Abby Escandon — to capture the momentum and a 9-6 lead entering the break.

Escandon led all FLC scorers with four and an assist, giving her a team-high 26 goals heading into tomorrow's regular season finale against Adams State University, which has already shattered her previous career-high of 11 goals set in 2019.

"For 'Esco' to not play a lot behind the cage today, which is her spot, it was great to see her still be able to score up top. She was executing anywhere she was around the cage, to be honest," Travis said.

The trio of sophomore Liv Crawford, freshman Haley Dostie and senior Ann Nelson all netted three goals apiece to pace the high-octane FLC offense.

True freshman Caprietta Abbadessa and junior midfielder Maren Clark would each add two goals apiece, as well.

Clark got the second-half scoring underway at the 27:54 mark, sparking another 7-1 run for FLC that ballooned its lead to 16-7 with 16:30 remaining.

CSU Pueblo countered with a 5-0 run of its own to trim the deficit to 16-12 with 9:07 remaining, but a quick FLC timeout and a score from Crawford — her 13th goal of the season — at the 8:14 mark settled the waters as the Skyhawks rolled to the 17-13 final.

"We got tired and I thought we were making some silly mistakes on the attacking side, maybe got a little too complacent with the lead," Travis said. "But we called that timeout and got a goal back and that kind of helped us settle back down."

As staggering as the FLC shot totals were, the Skyhawks' defense also put together an impressive 60 minutes as CSU Pueblo committed 22 turnovers to FLC's 14, while the ThunderWolves were just 12-for-21 on clear attempts and FLC won the groundball battle, 24-19.

Sophomore goaltender Averi Basso stopped six shots and faced just 23 total shot attempts; the second lowest allowed by the FLC defense this spring.

Basso and sophomore defenseman Avery Joslin led FLC with four groundballs apiece, while freshman Rebecca Kiyokawa added three groundballs, two turnovers and drew the assignment of stopping CSU Pueblo leading goal scorer Emily Eller.

Kiyokawa helped limit Eller, who ranks second in the RMAC with 40 goals scored this season, to just two goals Friday after she tallied six goals in the two teams' first meeting back on March 16.

"I thought our defense played really hard, body defense. We knew CSU Pueblo has mostly righties on its team, so we needed to force them left and I think we executed our ride very well, got a lot of turnovers and got out in transition," Travis said. "A big part of our game plan was also trying to shut down (Eller). She has been their main goal scorer all season long. We had Rebecca on her most of the game and we did a nice job holding tight on her."

Fort Lewis will look to close out the weekend strong on Saturday with a 1 p.m. matchup against Adams State University; a team the Skyhawks beat 25-1 back on March 27.

A win on Saturday's Senior Day, paired with Friday's win, would most likely guarantee FLC a spot in the RMAC Tournament after they held the fourth and final playoff position in the latest RPI rankings released by the RMAC on Thursday.

"We're excited to watch Abby and Ann during their final home game here and do Senior Day celebrations for the first time since I've been here," Travis said. "We also want to finish the job and come away with that last win."
