Skyhawks fall by 1-0 final in rematch against No. 11 Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colorado — Facing the same nationally ranked for the second time in eight days, the Fort Lewis College men's soccer team came up shy in its upset bid of No. 11 Colorado School of Mines, falling by a 1-0 final to the undefeated Orediggers.

Fort Lewis (3-2-1 overall, 3-2-1 RMAC) suffered a similar fate in the first matchup between the two teams on April 1 in Durango, another tight 1-0 loss to Colorado School of Mines (5-0-1 overall,5-0-1 RMAC) in double overtime.

CSM finished with a 19-7 shots advantage — the teams were even at 5-5 in the first half — and capitalized on a late opportunity in the 81st minute when Chris Seery netted his first of the season.

Fort Lewis put four shots on goal Friday, one apiece for redshirt junior Loic Jean-Baptiste, fellow juniors Denis Celik and Andres Hernandez, and senior Kacey Owensby.

In goal, redshirt junior Peter Byrne stopped four of the five opportunities on net that he face, upping his save percentage to .833 on the spring.

The Skyhawks will look to bounce back in Sunday's regular season finale against Adams State University, hunting three key points as teams continue to jockey for RMAC playoff positioning.

Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Dirks Field in Durango.
