FLC softball splits Saturday doubleheader, earns 3-1 road series win against Regis

DENVER, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College softball team earned a split during Saturday's doubleheader, picking up a crucial series win against Regis University heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

Fort Lewis (19-21 overall, 19-17 RMAC) lost Saturday's opener 11-1, but rallied to win the series finale 4-1 to take three of four from the Rangers (15-13 overall, 12-12 RMAC) as the two teams, along with Colorado State University Pueblo (20-17 overall, 18-16 RMAC), jockey for the final two playoff spots for the RMAC Tournament.

Fort Lewis currently sits in the sixth and final playoff spot in the RMAC standings, just behind CSU Pueblo and leapfrogging Regis based on win percentage.

"I'm happy with how we responded this road trip, and especially how we responded after Game One (Saturday)," said FLC head softball coach, Ashley Reeves. "We focused all week on being aggressive, offensively, and making the plays we needed to, defensively. The girls knew what was at stake and did a great job executing this weekend."

Game Two

Behind another strong start from senior right-handed pitcher Kendra Keahbone, and some timely offense, the Skyhawks earned a 4-1 victory in Saturday's finale to secure the series win.

"After Game One, we just told the girls we needed to figure out a way to move past it and that we still had a series we needed to go win," Reeves said. "We were able to do that, get some timely hits and won a game we needed to win."

Keahbone moved to 9-2 on the season and lowered her earned average to a team-best 2.46 after going all seven innings, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out two while not walking a batter.

The FLC offense broke through for a three-run fourth inning, kickstarted by a leadoff home run from junior infielder McKenna Hefley. It was Hefley's eighth home run of the season — tying her with freshman Brianna Leavell for the team lead — and 36th run batted in of the spring.

FLC would add two more runs in the inning on a two-out, two-run single off the bat of senior outfielder Shelby Hotchkiss that scored senior Pilar Gutierrez and sophomore Jaden Blaise Redus.

The Skyhawks would add one more insurance run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single courtesy of sophomore shortstop, Courtney Huff.

Hotchkiss and McKenna Hefley each finished 2-for-3 to lead the FLC offense, while junior Kylie Hefley, Huff and Blaise Redus each added singles to round out the Skyhawks' seven hits in the Game Two victory.

Game One

Saturday's opener went sideways on the Skyhawks in the late innings as, after taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, Regis answered with three runs of its own in the home-half of the inning.

Taking advantage of eight walks by the Skyhawks, the Regis offense added three runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to take the 11-1 victory.

Offensively, the Skyhawks' one run came via a throwing error by Regis, allowing McKenna Hefley, who was 2-for-3 in Game One, to advance to third and trot home on the play with an unearned run.

Fort Lewis, winners of seven of its last eight games, will look to build off the momentum of the series win heading into next weekend's series against No. 16 ranked Colorado Mesa University.

The four-game series will be played under the lights at Aspen Field, following FLC Commencement activities earlier in the day. Game times are scheduled for 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Friday, followed by 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday.

"We're going to go into the series against Colorado Mesa like we do anybody else," Reeves said. "We're going to go in expecting to win and focusing on what we need to do to make that happen."
