FLC men's soccer falls on the road in non-conference bout against No. 4 Orediggers

GOLDEN, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team hit the road for the first time this season on Friday, traveling out to Stermole Soccer Stadium for a showdown against No. 4 ranked Colorado School of Mines.

Unfortunately for the Skyhawks, the nationally ranked and defending RMAC champion Orediggers held serve at home in Friday's non-conference bout between the two RMAC foes, earning the 2-0 victory.

Fort Lewis (1-1-1 overall) produced the game's first great chance at the 3:26 mark of the first half, but had a shot attempt from freshman Maximilian Meier just miss the mark from giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.

Colorado School of Mines (3-1-0 overall) promptly answered with two quick strikes in the first half of its own, netting the first goal at the 8:15 mark by Quinn Collins, followed with an insurance goal in the 20th minute by Zane Sokolowski.

"I thought we started well and had one of the best chances of the game early on and weren't able to capitalize. Then all of a sudden it's a two-goal swing," said FLC head men's soccer coach, David Oberholtzer. "We made some adjustments at halftime and I thought our decision making was better and we played more on (CSM) half of the field, but it was just a little off night for us."

Offensively, Fort Lewis (1-1-1 overall) produced five shots and put two on net, one apiece coming from freshman Tomas Duenes and sophomore Aymaro Vargas. It marked the first time this season the Skyhawks were held off the scoreboard after the team produced 11 shots on goal and five goals through its first two games of 2021.

In net, senior goalkeeper Peter Byrne recorded an early season high of six saves while facing 20 total shots — eight on goal — by the Orediggers.

Fort Lewis will turn the page and look to bounce back Sunday when it completes the weekend road trip against Regis University. The Rangers are coming off a 2-1 victory against CSM on Wednesday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Regis Soccer Pitch in Denver.

"This was a good opportunity for a lot of the new guys to see what it's like playing on the road. Including our preseason games, we've been home for five games in a row. And I think we were able to see, in our good moments, that we're very capable, but also how quickly things can change if we let it slip," Oberholtzer said. "We need to hit the reset button for Sunday. I think if we put things together, we're going to be one of the top teams in the conference. We just have to get to that point. Playing Mines, and anther good team like Regis, early on are really good tests before we get to the conference schedule."
