Late rally falls shy in 2-1 road non-conference loss to Regis

DENVER, Colo. — The Fort Lewis College men's soccer team concluded a challenging road trip on Sunday with a non-conference clash against Regis University, falling by a 2-1 final to a Rangers team riding high after it upset No. 4 Colorado School of Mines earlier in the week.

Fort Lewis (1-2-1 overall, 0-0-0 RMAC) and Regis (3-0-0 overall, 0-0-0 RMAC) matched each other with seven shots apiece and with three shots on goal, while the Skyhawks dominated the corner kicks category, 7-2.

Regis opened the game's scoring in the 27th minute of the first half as Parker Klein slipped into the box and was able to find the back of the net on an assist from Michael Jimenez.

The Rangers would add what proved to be a much-needed insurance goal at the 56:57 mark of the second half by Kristian Hooker to briefly take a 2-0 advantage.

Fort Lewis answered back 18 minutes later as freshman Gabriel Legendre threaded a pass to fellow freshman Tomas Duenes, who buried his second goal of the fall to bring FLC back within one at the 74:50 mark.

The Skyhawks produced three more shots over the 15 minutes, including a dart from Sean Marek that was turned away by Regis goalkeeper Cooper Erickson in the 79th minute, but were unable to push across the equalizer.

Fort Lewis will rest and regroup as it looks to bounce back Friday at home against Adams State University. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Dirks Field in Durango.
